Color Blind Pilots

I just found out today I am what they call color defensent with Green and Red the medical examiner gave me the Tower light test and I passed so I have to go to Phisto anybody know how much it cost in Little Rock Arkansas

no idea what the cost is but there are plenty of color dif pilots out there - its not a big deal either. the important thing is that you can distinguish between red and green and white lights. thats it! you can even fly professionally with the SODA or waiver or whatever they are giving out these days.

the ishihara color test IMHO is outdated and does not look for specific color blindness. for example, i am color dificient in the since that there is a puke/ baby poop shade of green out there somewhere that my eyes see as khaki. my wife said "get me the green suitcase out of the closet"... and for the life of me i didnt know what the heck she was talking about... we had a heated discussion about how the damn bag was khaki or military green at best but not what i would call GREEN!!!

i explained this to the doctor during my next med renewal and he was like "ahhhh very interesting lets check that out."   ishihara slides i passed with the minimum. he had similar tests "by different manufacturers that look for color blindness a little differently" he said " lets see how you do on those." i got 100% on all of them. he asked "do you ever have trouble spotting planes at night or seeing the VASI?" i said "nope, sometimes i can tell nav lights, rotating beacons and VASIs from 20 or more miles out on a clear moonless night" tested my eyes to 20/15 and said "yeah... there is some oddball shade of green your just not picking up but u seem to do fine with all the other colors... i wouldnt even worry about it" so i didnt.


i think part of the problem is men in general

we only see in 13 basic colors kind of like windows default settings. red green blue yellow purple pink brown black etc.

women see in thousands of colors...

when a man sees red a woman sees - crimson, scarlet, ruby, burgundy

when a man sees blue a woman sees, royal blue, navy blue, indigo, cobalt

when a man sees green - a woman sees, lime, sour apple green, olive green, emerald

Rubbish- women just know more color names (in general). Their eyes work the same as ours. And with a little effort, any regular guy can learn the difference between primary red and scarlet, or navy blue and cerulean blue. Most of us don't bother with that because women generally make all color-related decisions in our lives...
A good friend of mine was an art major in college; when he explained to me once that any given "blue" (or any other color)also contains some red, white, green, etc. ("That red has more yellow in it than that one").. it was mind-blowing. It was as if I was seeing in a whole new way... but actually I was just thinking about colors differently.


But don't take my word for it- go to any major art museum that displays works by major classic painters... I'm pretty sure all of those gentlemen picked out the colors themselves, and could tell one from another. They were very talented, but their eyes were just eyes, same as yours and mine.

i took art once upon a time...

it really gets my wife when she points to 3 or 4 shades of blue and im like "blue"    "still blue"     "blue again" and she says "no no no its navy blue, roal blue, and cobalt blue"

all i can do is sit there going  ::) 'whatever'

funniest thing though with colors i had this student once and we were talking about sectional chart symbols about the "dashed blue line" "solid blue lines" "magenta lines" for months... finally on the day before his check ride he says "im sorry to say this i should have asked earlier... but what the hell is magenta?" i dont recall my immediate reaction but could you imagine the look on my face!?!?! hahahahaha we had a good laugh about it!
