can a student or recreational pilot request a special VFR clearance in class D airspace with visibility is less than 3 miles ?   Does anyone know where in the FAR/AIM I can find this.

"A student pilot may not act as pilot in command of an aircraft with a flight or surface visibility of less than 3 statute miles during daylight hours or 5 statute miles at night."

And remember... even for pilots who are allowed to fly SVFR, there are some airports that do not provide SVFR; it's usually noted on the chart.

Special VFR can be like a loophole or intentional gray area... even for a student pilot. It's up to the pilot to use it and a tower to grant it. KOSU is the Ohio State University flight school's home base. You don't need three mile visibility if you never leave the pattern and there have been many days where it was 2 mile visibility and the pattern was full of student pilots doing touch-and-gos. And.. if a student pilot is out solo-ing and the weather goes goofy (it happens).. A special VFR landing is the only way he's getting back on the ground. It's not the norm, and hardly talked about.. but it happens.

If you can't find an answer to a question, don't be afraid to ask your instructor. That's what they're there for. I'll drive up to the airport, or even call my instructor whenever I have a question that I can't find an answer too, though I won't bug my instructor at home

Also, try to familiarize yourself with the regulations. Atleast know what the major sections are for.

And don't forget SimV. We have some very knowledgeable pilots here who know a lot, but remember to stick with what your instructor tells you, because this is an international community so it's not uncommon for pilots here
