i'd check out what they use at the FBO you're going to be going to.  It's easier if you're both on the same page (literally).  But, i've used the Sporty's programs in the US and they're great!

Also, do they even make Sporty's stuff for the UK?  Something you'll want to check to make sure you're learning the right regulations.
The day is always better when you're flying upside down.

They would work fine. Sure the exams are different, but the principals are the same. Wings in the UK are just like wings in the US. They would definetly help your learning.

I dunno UK flight training requirements, so blah.

Well I got "The Student Pilot's Flight Manual" a long time ago. It's still in production and I have the up to date copy at my house, they update it regularly. Might take a look into that.

Oh and the aircraft-oriented study things would still obviously still apply. A 747 in America is a 747 in the UK too!

Well I guess I could throw this in too. Keep your copy of Flight Sim on hand, that is pretty good training software right there. You can practice things and crash without paying the bills. ;)

John and Martha King's stuff is very well-respected, and I'm sure there's a jillion other new programs out there now. Not currently training, but when I finally get around to IFR  training, I'll probably go with the King series.
And I agree that FS is actually a useful tool- I flew a very crude install of an early, early version a little bit when I was a newbie student, and I think it helped me with some of the basics, like visualization and timing of events.

LOL!! Equally embarrassing as in RL, but much cheaper!! :D
That's another basic: Checklists!! FS is good for that. As soon as they add smarter AI and a seat-of-the-pants feedback device, it'll be almost perfect...
