does anyone know how I could go about replacing the smoke/ wake so that it won't turn my fsx into a slideshow? Any help appreciated.

Your effects are listed in the aircrafts .cfg file in the [Effects]
section. Looks like this:

[EFFECTS]
wake=fx_wake
water=fx_spray
dirt=fx_tchdrt
concrete=fx_sparks
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_s, 1

Maybe a bit more information on what your problem is and what you want to accomplish might help in answering your query.
Take Care,

well, when I am still gaining speed on the water, my pc lags down to 3 fps. when I'm in the air, there's no problem. I'm guessing its a problem with the wake. I've had this problem with other fs9 aircraft converted to fsx.

What you need to "comment out' is the [smokesystem] You should be able to put "//" in front of [smokesystem]  ( //[smokesystem] ) and that should eliminate all the effects in the smokesystem entry.

Due to the number of effects involved, I don't think you can really substitute in effects that would dramatically increase your frame rates.
