FSX and Windows 8

this may be a bit early but since there are so many beta copies out now of windows 8, is anything known yet about FSX compatibility?

Uh oh. Microsoft's Compatibility Center for Windows 8 Release Preview site says that all versions of FSX are not compatible. Same for Combat Flight Simulator. I'm surprised to see that. But that may only be in reference to the pre-release of Win8. I hope.

The university where I work has made Win8 Enterprise available to me and other techs (one of the perks of working there - we get stuff early), but I have only 1 licensed copy of FSX. Not sure how much testing I could do without activation. Is there a time bomb/time limit for how long FSX will run if it's not activated?

From what I've read in reviews, Windows 8 was made with touch screens and mobile devices in mind but will work on PCs also. Stick with windows 7 or XP and your FSX is safe for a while..

Microsoft's Compatibility Center for Windows 8 Release Preview site says that all versions of FSX are not compatible.

On closer look, that site is just a user poll, with no real results from any testing done by Microsoft.

Win8 does have a desktop under the phone-like Metro user interface. A Microsoft rep who briefed us at the university claimed Win8 runs on average 30% faster than Win7, but that most of the changes are for consumers, online shopping, and social networking, all the stuff we'll have to disable when Win8 is widely deployed where I work.

Progressive universities want to be on the leading edge of technology, so older versions of Windows are only retained for compatiblity situations. Though we did pretty much skip Vista!

I still remember when they said something much like that about VISTA...

...and still remember how things worked in THE REAL WORLD.

...and in the case of the average user that, intelligently, uses that... for sake of clean speaking let's call it manure, only on his or her smartphone...

All in all, Win8 seems to set itself as another bogus version of Windows... a NOT so intelligent choice to make with people getting on well with Android on cellphones and tablets and starting to ask themselves about using Linux on their PCs.

I'd be the first to agree that people working at big corporations do very idiotic things. That's a built-in feature of authority-driven organizations and corporate culture. But I would not want to return to a world of computers without Windows. I'm old enough to remember what that was like. I'm just glad to hear that FSX is running okay on the new OS. The shortcomings of Win8 are already being documented and, historically, it usually takes Microsoft's second release of an OS to "get it right." If you are in business and you want to run strategic applications, Windows is the intelligent choice.

All things in this world have a life cycle, so does software, and new versions of Windows will be released no matter how much Linux fans carp about it. One might as well complain about direct current being better than alternating current for our homes. The standard is set. I'm not particularly fond of the internal combustion engine in my car, but that's the standard, with electric-hybrids and diesel a small minority. I don't waste energy or time complaining to anyone about what makes my car or computer run.

The too-many distros of Linux lost their big chance in 2008 when Vista flopped, the so-called "Year of Linux" that didn't happen. Lack of apps and content keep Linux in its niche, not the OS itself. On servers, mobile devices, and gadgets it will remain, doing good work, but not on so many desktop computers. I'm always puzzled that so many Linux fans are hardcore free marketers, but they won't accept that Windows is the most successful OS in the marketplace. But, hey, there's X-Plane for Linux, right? Go at it!
