Why don't I have fog layers?

Postby michaelb15 » Tue Mar 20, 2012 2:24 pm

I am wondering what I can do to get my fog layers working....

I used to never worry about it becasue my computer was crippled enough with it, but now it is tearing it up with the new processor :D :D

But anyway I have seen pictures of fog layering in other people's shots.  (like this one)

But I don't even get anything like that..

I will just be climbing through a thick fog layer, just to get unlimited visibility at 3000 feet.

it is VERY unrealistic (obviously fog just doesn't disappear once ya get above it, you should still be able to see it)

and also, kinda annoying.. As I will be making an approach that looked clear, but then out of nowhere you are into 1/2 mile visibility trying to do a visual approach.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this garbage? lol

Thankyou very much!
I am somwhere I don't know where I am!!!

In FS9 and FSX, the fog layer, like shown in your screenshot above, is represented by a flat texture of the cirrus cloud.
If you have default FS cloud textures, then you will probably see something like this screenshot. If however you have installed some alternate cloud texture, there's a good chance that your fog layer gets less visible because of its new texture.
Have you installed any cloud textures, like HDE or something like that ?

I don't ever remember getting any fog like the screenshot above.. I was just showing what I thought I should have (at least that)

But as I said, I do not have ANY fog once I get above it.

the fog just disappears once I am over it.

I would like to keep it so that I can see it, and it still obscures the ground, even if I am well above it

You'll need another weather engine then, because the Cirrus layer is the only way that FS9 or FSX knows for drawing the upper limit of a visibility layer.

would active sky work?

I have had Active Sky ever since V4 and can tell you that effect doesn't appear. Which for me is as good as it could get. the FS franchise has a... <expletive deleted> representation of fog layers. :P

Fog layer in FS appear like solid white colored mercury (because of the eyesore "not sticking" effect on its borders) that have inundated a valley. Death by drowning in a white mercury deluge to all the valleys' inhabitants around the world. That's what it appears. And once you get below it... it suddenly disappears and the sky returns sparkling clear. If it's not realistic that. ::)

Actually... distant memories make me think that FS98 and predecessors had actually better behaving fog layers that got lost in the upgrades. I could be wrong, since it's been a while, but I seem to remember they were actually more realistic... or maybe it was the fact that there was nothing better around... :-/

Must find a little time to reinstall the old FS98 to bring it up for a spin just for a sentimental walk down memory lane... :)

There is no such a thing as overkill. Only unworthy targets.
