[HELP] FSX.cfg

Postby AirBusBeluga » Fri Feb 24, 2012 12:09 pm

Hey! My name is Julius and this is my second post in these forums. So...
I know you can improve FSX's graphics with addons, in-game settings and editing fsx.cfg, right? So... What should I change to get better graphics? :P

*I've got the FSX.cfg Editor*

I've got a nvidia Geforce GTX 560 and a intel core i3 processor.
No, I know the processor ain't very good but my graphics card is :-)

So, please help me! What should I change? I couldn't find any helping guide on the internet.

They link this URL

http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

and they configure it for you for free , I did it,its safe ,however I would recommend you more knowledge and opinion about this link, before proceed to use it

Well I'll try that 1 out, so I enterd what I know, but I've got some questions I would love to get answerd:).

1. "How many 'CPUs/Threads'
show in task manager?" I don't know where to see that? My computer is on Swedish, so if you know where I can find it, please describe from the location of where it shows "Threads".

2. "Is hyperthreading active?" How do I know that? Is it something with ym graphics card?

Thanks.

Julius its have to be with multi core processors (cpu) ,Do you have a coreduo ?

Hi,

I used to have an i3 and you can get a lot of performance out of the little thing.

Hyper threading is normally ON.
For the editor on that website you need to tell it you have 4 threads the i3 has 2 physical cores with 2 logical cores per physical one so set it to 4.

However it's better if after you use http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html
you go in to your fsx.cfg file find affinity mask and set it to 14.

This is because if you have SP2 for fsx or acceleration fsx addresses multicore processors so setting affinity mask to 15 just tells fsx to use everything which it will do anyway.

Setting affinity mask to 14 however will tell FSX to leave one core for certain complex functions and focus the rest of the load over the other 3 logical cores. This allows fsx to run much smoother than if you use all 4 logical cores at once.

I hope this helps.

Don't worry about making mistakes in you FSX.CFG file because if you ruin it you can just delete it and run FSX and FSX will make a brand new error free one.

Hey all! Thanks for your answers :)

My i3 shows 4 CPU's. :)

Well I've installed REX and it made everything look alot better so bonus on that one.

But one thing, my fsx.cfg doesn't have the row "FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.33" Under [MAIN].. :/
Can I just add it then or is there something wrong? :P

Thanks!

My AffinityMask is set at 224! What does that tell you? :-?

224 ? In binary, this means 11100000.
So you have 8 cores, and since you wrote you have an i7, it means 4 cores and 4 virtual cores, because your hyperthreading is active in the BIOS.

This value is very, very bad actually. You're basically telling FSX to use only the virtual part of the 3rd core, the 4th core, and the virtual 4th core.
You should use 11111100 (252) instead, to tell FSX to use all of the cores 1, 2 and 3, while leaving core0 to windows processes.
And it might be even better to leave those virtual cores alone, which means 01010100 (84).
People with quadcore but without hyperthreading should use 1110 (14).

Thanks for that Daube.
I'll try each of your suggestions in turn and see what's best.

OK. Tried the above settings.
Although the difference isn't huge I think I can see a slight improvement when set to 84.
Any improvement always appreciated.
Thanks Daube.

You're welcome :)

Just to put it simply once more: using more cores will not lead to any additionnal FPS. The various CPU cores are used by FSX ONLY to build the terrain and refresh the textures and mesh, and place the autogen.
The number of GHz will define how much FPS you'll get.
The number of cores will define how fast your terrain will be drawn.
If your CPU doesn't have enough GHz, you will have low FPS.
If your CPU doesn't have enough core (dual or mono-core), then you'll get blurries.

With the 84 value for the affinity mask, you are using all of your physical cores excepted the first one, core0, where all the Windows processes are running.
