Comparing Scenery Add-On's

Postby fetzer » Sat Jul 23, 2011 11:25 am

I'm looking to purchase ORBX scenery Pacific Northwest and also the Central Rockies scenery packages.  I've been doing a bit of research and I've come across other posts talking about Mega Scenery Earth as a texture/scenery add-on and other similar products.  The question I have is this;  Is one package better than the other or am I beating a dead horse by purchasing the ORBX software in addition to Mega Scenery.  Since both are scenery/texture add-on's do I need both?  Any insight into this matter would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you

It looks like Mega is that photo-scenery in some spots where it looks too flat when when flying low/slow. It looks phenomenal from higher altitudes though. I don't use it so I can't be 100% on that, it's what I gathered from looking at snap-shots from it.
Now ORBX, This I do own(PNW,Pacific Fjords,so far) and can can attest to it being awesome. 8-)
It really enhanced my simming quite a bit and I can't wait to get caught up with the rest of their North American sceneries.
Plus, it's located in my favorite skies to fly in. ;)

It really depends on your flying habits I guess. ORBX, I think, is more geared to the GA crowd. :-/

Good luck,
jime

I have both Mega Scenery Earth coverage of Washington state and ORBX PNW, NRM etc......ORBX has great eye candy and looks fantastic.....but, I live in Washington state and I know what I'm supposed to be seeing......ORBX falls utterly short for flying VFR by known landmarks....that's why I like to fly with photoreal scenery by Mega Scenery Earth.....which does include autogen, but no custom objects, airports, or any of the awesome features that come with ORBX products :)

To sum it up, it's really like comparing apples to oranges........it depends on what you're looking for in your sim :)

jime is right, I have both. Mega is photoreal, so if you like to fly low and slow, it won't look as good. ORBX scenery is a combination of some photoreal and normal texturing.

In my opinion, ORBX is the absolute best scenery available at this time. I would also suggest PFJ and NRM as they butt up to PNW seamlessly. And then there is FSAddon's

Tongass Fjords. It is almost exactly like ORBX, as it was made by Holger Sandmann and others, and it butts up to PFJ seamlessly. I have PNW, PFJ, NRM, and CRM and fully

intend to add SRM and Southern California when released. I also have all the ORBX airports for these areas and I am completely satisfied with the products. And I have all

of Australia, but have yet to add any airports. For all around flying, you can't beat ORBX.

And no, I am not affiliated with ORBX in any way, other than being a member of their forums so I can get tech support if needed and learn about new products in the works.

I took so long to type this, Chuck's post showed up after I hit save. But he is right also. But I use FSWidgets GMap to navigate by, so the lack of landmarks doesn't bother me.

Mega looks really great from high altitudes, but I spend most of my time below 2500' AGL.

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.
