Error Msg in FSX

I have a dual quad, 4GB system, xp, with a 1GB graphics card that i have been running about a month with no problems. All of a sudden, in the last two days, after flying for about an hour, FSX shuts down and I get an error message stating that I am out of memory. Restart FSX and adjust sliders. I have an 80GB exterior hard drive where I moved a bunch of the planes that I have downloaded, trying to free up some memory but it did not do anything. I'm wondering if there is a way to put a lot of my add on scenery on the exterior hard drive to save more. I appreciate any help in advance.

Welcome to SimV,

The out of memory (OOM) error has nothing to do with where you store your files.

What version of Windows you are running (XP, Vista, W7) and any windows Service Packs you have installed.

What version of FSX you have installed and any FSX Service Packs you have installed.

Also does the error occur in the same general geographic area and/or did you install any new scenery around the time the errors began?

I'm running the lastest XP, with FSX Acceleration & it happened at different locations. I haven't installed any service packs, but my FSX Software isn't that old.I'm not aware of any FSX Service Packs.  I only have had it for about six months. I have a lot of scenery installed, think they may be my problem?

It's amazing in modern systems just how much memory can be used up without much seeming to be running.

If you press Alt-Ctrl-Delete you can then select the Performance tab (you probably know this already) to see how much of your memory is being used.


Right now - with nothing but my mail and Firefox running I am using 2.4GB of memory. This is probably because of all the cr@p running in the background.

It may be an idea to run your FSX on a fresh reboot and if you really want a good flight try removing any hogging resources you don't need. It seems ridiculous to have to say this for a 4GB RAm system but that's how it is sometimes!

You may also be right that some sceneries will use up a lot of CPU resources which in turn add to memory resources .. Are you flying through your addon sceneries during your crashes?

Your right about that. I also know that XP holds back a big chunck of memory for swap & there is a way to go into the bios and change that just didn't want to do that, but I may. I work in technology at a school district but that's not my specialty. My tech will be back tomarrow and I may get him to check it out. I will check out the performance tab and see if anything is taking up too much resources. Thanks for the ideas. Also the two times it has happened, the first time was just flying over FSX standard scenery & the next time I was flying over installed scenery so who knows.

If you have Acceleration installed I believe all service packs were included. You can check, when flying, on the Alt menu select Help>About...  it will list the version and number.

If you haven't already, check the 'XP/Windows Setup...' sticky at the top of this forum. 'Bout half way down the 1st page it addresses the OOM error.

Thanks so much for your help, I read the info in the help file and it sounds like it is just the fix I need. It makes sense.
