Postby cechant » Tue Jun 21, 2011 10:56 am

Hi
I have downloaded the scenery in object for FSX.
I have a problem to extract the files.
When I try to extract the files after the first one I have the following error message:the file con not be extracted as archive.
I use the provided program to do the extraction.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Cechant

Where are you downloading the files to?

Do NOT download them directly into the default FSX folder because you WILL have problems if you use W7.
Download them into a folder outside C:\Program files - because W7  'Program files' folder in W7 is locked by default (what morons)

So please try downloading it to a folder outside Program files then run the 7ip program (this is what it says in the readme).

I have not yet tried it  (I am skeptical, to be honest) and I may well delete this 'file' because it is outside our normal absolute requirements to have all files in house.

Meanwhile at least make sure your files are downloaded into a temp folder in your C drive and not in the FSX folder!

I downloaded all the files into my c:\temp\fsxtemp.

The 7ip is installed in c:\programs (x86).

When I attempt the extract, the extraction is pointed to C:\temp\yellowstone\scenery.7z\

The results are "unspecified error" in the 7ip panel.

Whatever it's called, I dl'd it from the readme, and I get the "extract" window like the one you posted, however, after I enter the password, and select the OK button, I get the "unspecified error" message. The only other difference is the "extract to" destination.

OK I have tried it just as scenery dude instructed and - as I expected - all is good.

Here are his simple and clear instructions:

Step 1. (download ALL the files & keep them in the same TEMP folder)

Step 2. Please download 7ip from the link below and install it on your pc. Winrar can not open this file due to its high compression.

http://www.7-zip.org/

Step 3. Make sure all 17 scenery files are located in the same folder and right click on the first file with the ending .7z or 001 and and go to 7zip and click extract files. (The password is simviation, all lowercase and no bold.)

Step 4. You will have a lot of files where you extracted to in scenery/scenery/Yellow(x.x) Move all of these files in the folder to your MICROSOFT GAMES/FSX/ADDON SCENERY/SCENERY folder.

Step 5. Start up fsx and go to Yellowstone airport (KWYS) and the scenery begins directly to your left. You can use top down view to view to entire park.

(If you have problems make sure your scenery texture resolution is at 1 Meter per pixel and that addon scenery/scenery folder is added to your fsx scenery library.)

I am following the instructions, but I still get "unspecified error" after entering the password and clicking "OK".  I don't get past your second screenshot.

I bit the bullet & downloaded the whole archive - all 17 files. This took a long time (30 minutes to extract :o) but it works as advertised for me. Perhaps one of the files you downloaded is corrupt. This should be easy enough to check as they're all 100 Mb except for scenery.7z.017 which is 12.2 Mb.

I'm a tad suspicious of it as it obviously involved a lot of work & I can't find any credits in the documentation. No author's name or contact address. This seems very unusual to me.

Nothing unusual these days at all ... I have been involved in several 'disputes' between freeware guys and angry payware developers who don't like that someone has produced a scenery, for example, that uses Google Earth. The payware guy have to pay google (for commercial use) whereas the freeware guys don't. So the anger begins. Payware wishes to extinguish freeware. That is what has come about. (with one or 2 exceptions like Iris and Alphasim)

A LOT of contributors wish to remain anon these days to stop the aggro and insults from the payware (and the sites that exist on payware - you all know them) . I encourage this - I have seen too many freeware developers bullied into giving up by payware bozos. I have nearly every anon uploader to this site in my contact list. I will defend them to the hilt as I defend this site.
