Had a friend tell me yesterday that I'd get better performance

You might, Windows Aero is a theme that is default on most windows 7 computers. Though I think that the performance enhancement would be negligible.

Aero is a window theme.  I have had Aero on for a long time and I don't notice any difference. 

I have the framerate target set at unlimited and usually get 40-60, sometimes more.

FSX's own install instruction manual tells you not to use it, so if microsft themselves say it can be a problem then why not turn the aero glass feature off.
