ATC wont let me respond?--IFR

An ongoing problem im having is with the ATC. When I choose to fly IFR with the ATC I will get about half way or 3/4 way through the flight no problems then the ATC will give me something like descend to 10,000 feet, which I will do then it wont give me the option to say anything back? Soon after awhile the ATC will cut my IFR plan because I didnt respond then when I try to just go to airport traffic it does the same thing? When I didnt fly IFR it seemed to work good but has anyone else had this problem and fixed it at all?

I'm assuming you mean that the bottom half of the ATC box (where you normally select the reply you want to send) is blank with no menu options. If so, then although I have no idea what causes it, I have a pretty quick and easy solution that works for me.

I simply switch my COM1 radio frequency to something (anything) else and the bottom half of the ATC box then gives me an option to tune to XXX frequency - which is always the facility I was just trying to respond to. When I switch to that frequency I then find waiting for me the usual range of menu selections - including 'acknowledge instruction' - which had gone missing just a few moments before.

As I say, it always works for me and I hope it does for you too.

During your decent are you getting '..please expedite your decent....' from atc? There is no opportunity to responsed to this except to get down to the assigned altitude before time/distance run out. If you don't, atc cancels your flight plan, no questions asked

Thanks. I already know which commands you cant respond to and such but on the descent it all the options I use to have just vanish. Like change runway..etc. including the acknowledge whatever they told me. But after it cancels I can make another IFR plan.

Ill try to do the COM1 plan that Brian gave me and see what works.
