b_17 tail wheel not pivoting when turning

Postby bombardier » Sat Jan 29, 2011 2:48 pm

hello aain:
do not mean to take up this space also. but I'm looking for someone who would know how this: when turning   a2a shockwave b-17 around on a tight radius at an airfield I'v noticed that the tail wheel is not pivoting around when making a tight turn. I went into vc and the lever says tail wheel is unlock so I'm thinking that it should be pivoting around for a tight turn but its not. I went to the outside looked under the tail where the tail wheel  is at and twist my yoke and its not even pivoting. I want to send this company  or site a post telling them whats happening and maybe they might have an answer but cannot find there web site.  the other b_17 that came with this package does the same thing when it comes to the tail wheel.

hope anyone  have an  answer to this.

what I'm I missing

I'm not sure if you mean the aircraft was moving during the tight turn when you checked it or you were just trying to turn it to make a tight turn :-/

The tail wheel will be free castoring

So it will not steer with the stick

You need to be moving and tun with diff brakes...in doing this you should see the tail wheel castoring.

Try this and take another look

on the default dc-3, you can unlock/lock the tailwheel by using shift + G, try this on your B17

But: locked just stops you from turning.

May the Mynd be with you.
So far my number of landings either passenger or pilot equal my number of takeoffs.

hello to you two: garr russell and evvfcx
and thanks for the response and your time to anser this post:.

I got my b-17 to turn tightly to the right which is ok now but when I try to turn tight to the left my left diff brake does not work. what I did was on my yoke I have 2 numbers specifying the diff brake right and diff brake left I think it is button 10 diff right button 11 diff left.

If differential brakes are activated in Aircraft.cfg you should be able to operate them with the brake button combined with left or right rudder. This works fine with my twist-grip joystick.

hello hager:  thanks for the idea you have

I have looked at the B-17 aircraft cfg and there is on diff right bake and diff left brake.  so this is what I'm thinking I do have  german bomber dornier I tested the turn radius and at low speeds very low speeds I can whip the tail around 360 degrees with no diff left brake or no diff right brake just a twist of the flight controler with some rudder movement and it turned so what if I took that command from the german dornier copy  and paste that to the B-17 aircraft cfg would that work.

It's not my idea. Try it with the default DC-3.

The FSX DC-3 has a steerable tailwheel & also differential brakes. This is the Aircraft.cfg entry under [brakes]

differential_braking_scale = 1.0

If the above entry is not in your B-17 Aircraft.cfg add it & try it.

hello again:

I tried the copy and paste of the differential braking scale=1.0 from dc-3 to the B-17 aricraft cfg no luck there I still have diff  right brake but no diff left brake seems odd to me. I did paste it under brake section in the b-17 hope that will work but nothing. is there any other  place in the b_17 aircarft cfg that I need to add more information. maybe changeing diff brake scale=1.0 and change  the 1.0 to 2.0 maybe.

The CFG entry should work. Did you try it out on the default DC-3?

is there any other  place in the b_17 aircarft cfg that I need to add more information.

I can't give more advice on this without having the B-17. Sorry.
