FSX duplicate install

Postby patchz » Sun Apr 18, 2010 9:34 am

[color=#000000]I am trying to install a second/duplicate install of FSX on a second drive in Windows 7. I have renamed the main FSX folder, the FSX folder containing fsx.cfg, fsx.cfg, and fsx.exe in preparation for a duplicate install. But when I load disc 1, instead of installing the program, I get a choice of uninstall or repair only. Do I need to uninstall Acceleration first, or are there files to rename there as well? Also, when I renamed the fsx folder in C:\users\patchz\appdata\roaming\microsoft\fsx where fsx.cfg resides, and then ran the game with disc one in place, it created another

The FSX installer looks in the registry to see if FSX is installed already.  It would be pretty difficult to do a duplicate install for FSX.  Sorry I can't really help, I don't have any idea what key it looks for, or where.

well you could cheat. Make a copy of your current FSX install and put it in a new folder. Then get FSXRegistry tool and point the registry to the NEW folder. This way you'll ahev two istalls BUT you'll only be able to use one at a time, having to reset the registry each time.

Could be a mess, IMJHO, but it is doable.

Is this a second hdd or a partitioned C drive? I thought a second hard drive should be named D:/ and the operating system on c:/ So one copy is on C:/ with the OS and one is on D:/ by itself. I may be right out to lunch on this, but that is how I thought it works.  :)

I know it's possible, Shane had two FSX installs and three FS9 installs at one time. But I'm not sure he had acceleration, and I think that may be part of the problem.

You're right Steve, it is two separate drives, C:\ and D:\. I'm sure someone that knows how will come along sooner or later.

Hi Larry

I think Nick N is the one to talk to. He posted how to do it awhile back.

If the purpose is just a backup then clone the 2nd hard drive, put it in the same system and select which hard drive you want at boot time.  :)

I think the Guru for this may be Friar Bill.

Yes I do have acceleration on both copies.

You only need to do one install, then just copy and rename it.

I have only done this on XPpro, so I'm not sure if Vista or 7 will complicate things.

[color=#000000]Update. I sent Fr Bill a pm requesting help, but I guess he does not come by very often. I still have the same problem with the copy so I am not using it. I have put off the purchase of GEX pending a resolution. Hope someone with an answer comes along.
