FSX is misbehaving!

Postby Kaworu » Sun Oct 10, 2010 7:59 pm

Alrighty guys (and gals!). It's been awhile since I've been on Simv! Glad to be back though, you guys have helped me out a lot through the years.

Anyway, to the point. FSX keeps crashing....sort of....frankly I'm not sure what to call it.

Whenever I go into a menu, or the map, the graphics will be all screwed up. Sometimes, FS seems to try to show ALL the different external and internal views at once (which actually is kind of entertaining in a psychedelic sort of way!). Other times the screen goes black, but the sound keeps going fine...I can still hit S to change view and the sound changes with it. I can hit Alt, and the Alt-menu will appear--but with no words! You can still hit ESC and get the exit menu. When you do, everything is fine except for the 3d preview of the aircraft...which is black!

Other times, it goes partly black, and part of what was on the screen before i go into the menu sticks. This is the only thing I've gotten a picture of, which is attached.

I haven't the faintest idea of what is causing this. Here's what I do know:
-it tends to happen on the heavies (CLS 767, PMDG 747, etc) and not smaller GA aircraft and medium jets (like the Wilco E-170).
-it happens after I enter a settings menu, the map, and sometimes after switching views several times
-It happens after I enter or exit full-screen I alt-tab into or out of FS.
-Doesn't always happen right away; I can often go into menus for the first 2 or 3 minutes of a flight and then later I can't without the above happening.
-It doesn't appear to be related to scenery levels. I run FTX PNW without problems while in a smaller plane. It only happens to big jets. It doesn't appear to be related to whether it's an addon or stock airport; it happens at both stock international airports and HQ addons equally often and soon. (that's just my impression, it may be related to scenery, but there's not pattern to suggest any relation)

Can anybody tell me what's going on? Any fixes out there?

Thanks! Glad to be back on Simv!

Hmm, I thought I installed SP2. I do not have Acceleration, and I'd rather not spend the money to buy it. Do I need it for some reason?

I'll look into the SP2 though. Thanks.

Hmm, that looks very problematic.
Maybe something with your graphics card? Try reinstalling your drivers?
Or reinstall FSX and see if the problems persist.

[edit]Oh, and I would call that freaking out and having a temper tantrum. ;D[/edit]

I am trying the 260.x drivers (beta) and they seem to be helping. I've only been able to test for a few mins though...so I'll post more on that later. Thanks.

If the other proposed solutions don't work your directX install may be corrupt.  Unfortunately to fix that you will probably have to rebuild the OS.

Couldn't he just re-download DirectX related things from the website?
(Trying to have him avoid an OS rebuild over a game.)

Alternatively, is the graphics card overheating, getting enough power from your power supply, anything like that?

Faulty RAM?
Did you defrag your HD?
Disk-check?

Just trying to toss out anything I can think of to help right now, even if some/most of it is obvious.

I would very much suggest you search the intertubes for HIGHMEMFIX=1.
