Terrain elevation problems

Postby patchz » Wed Jul 21, 2010 7:37 am

In the past, with FS9, I had some anomalies after adding mesh. I added 10m mesh in FSX yesterday, but only Hawaii and parts of the continental U.S. A little while ago, I flew from Princess Juliana to St. Barth's and then

SABA. Princess Juliana was fine, but St. Barth's and SABA had problems. At St. Barth's, the runway and taxiway were elevated about 100' above where they are supposed to be and ai aircraft and cars were down below. At

SABA, parts of the terrain were elevated about 100' with the buildings, runway, etc. visible down below in the holes where the terrain had not been elevated. You can still land at St. Barth's, though tricky, but SABA is now

impossible. I have not flown to or from St. Barth's and SABA since I got FSX until now and I have not added any scenery anywhere near that area. Both airports are normal in my freeware only install. The problems exist

only in my payware install of FSX. The US mesh is by Wayne Evans and the Hawaii Mesh by Lance Tucker and I got them in the FSX Terrain Mesh oldest files from our server. I think it was on page 99. I even temporarily

removed them, but no change. Any ideas?

I had this once, after changing the AFCAD of just one single airfield. The only thing I could do was the Solution of all solutions:

Reinstalling FSX ::)

So, did you install any terrain/airfield addons just before this occurred? Deleting that might help.
However, in my case, even deleting every associated file didn't work :-/ So be prepared for the worst.

Good luck, I hope someone can shed a light in this.

I'd suggest getting Revo Uninstaller and giving that a go. It gets everything...

Its a common occurrence that we have all had with FS 2004.

With our various Meshes, some Airfields are on a plateau, others are down in a hole in the ground.

We have got used to it now over the years, and it doesn't particularly worry us any more!...

...in fact its an obstacle to be overcome during our daily flights!.... ;D...!

Multiplayers will comment on it during their Flights, so we all experience it!

[color=#000000]Yeah, I remember Paul. I even posted a few shots of some of it. And like I said, SABA is the only one I can't use, but I rarely fly there anyway. St. Barths is actually a bit more of a challenge now, but still usable. I think I quit adding mesh at some point in FS9 because of these problems. And I don't think I'm going to add anymore to FSX. Sometimes, it really makes the scenery pop, others it just looks stupid.

I use FS Global SE Mesh for the whole World, plus the occasional SRTM Mesh for areas I generally fly, and that, together with some add-on Airfields, results in elevation anomalies, but I either put up with them or avoid them!.... ;)...!

I just tell myself its not real!... ;D... ;D...!

BTW Paul, I spent five hours on the phone/online with Alienware trying to fix it where I could turn shadows on. They updated my bios and my video driver, but it did not fix it. They are supposed to do some research and call me back, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Hello Larry....

I gather you are using the dastardly FSX, but I suppose my FS 2004 is similar.....
...have you gone to; in the Sim: Menu > Options > Settings > Display >
Scenery > Cast Shadows.
Aircraft Reflection + Cast shadows.

Sometimes it/they get turned off.... :o.... Pays to check all the settings every now and again!

Paul...a shadowy figure...G-BPLF...FS 2004...FS Nav.... 8-)...!

I know how to turn it on. The problem is that when I do, the video driver crashes and locks up the sim. It was doing the same thing in Google Earth. After updating the bios and video driver, Google Earth seems to work now, but turning shadows on in FSX still crashes the driver.

Come back into the FS 2004 fold again, Larry..... :-*....
