P[quote]Photographic scenery:

I take an aerial photograph of my back garden from my bedroom window pointing vertically down, observing the garden chair and table, watering can, the various potted plants and small shrubs, etc, similar to a vertical Satellite view of my back garden from space, which is what we see in our aerial view of the MS Photographic scenery shots.

I then process the film and produce the finished film.

I take the film out side, turn it on its edge and view it as it would be seen at ground level in the Photographic scenery and compare the two images...

..and the photo is is perfectly flat.

The Garden Chair and table, watering can, the potted plants and shrubs, etc, in the photograph do not stand upright, in relief, from the photograph!

Which is what I observe at ground level, in the MS Photographic scenery.

I cannot see how a photograph taken from space can be seen as a complex 3-dimensional scene, in relief, at ground level?

..and that is how my MS Photographic scenery works. It can be overlaid on the ground contour mesh, but any objects in the scene are not seen as

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

Thanks for the kind words, folks.

As Paul points out, the limitation of photoscenery is that it's flat. A photo is a photo. No matter how sharp, clear, and realistic it looks, viewed edge on (or nearly so) nothing stands up. Add to that the fact that most imagery is 1 meter per pixel at best, and you add poor definition, when viewed close up.

This scenery looks OK at about 1000 ft AGL, when not over populated areas. You have to be higher for those because the lack of a verticle dimension is very obvious below that altitude when buildings are involved.

Unfortunately, adding objects/autogen to photoscenery is not a simple matter. Essentially you have to either rebuild Rome or punch holes throughout the photoscenery to allow the default FSX scenery to show through (which defeats the purpose of photoscenery in the first place).

Personally I get a much better sense of place with photoscenery. But there's no such thing as a free lunch. To get that, I give up a sense of realism when close to the ground.

Hello Rich... ;)...!

...sorry Mate... :-[...!

..after a bit of a "moan"... :o...it's time I congratulated you on your excellent work on the Photo Scenery!.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

...it looks wonderful..from "up here"!.... ;)...!

Its well with a try, for those beautiful tours at high altitude, and far superior to the default (repeating!) Autogen...(I hate that MS Patchwork effect!)... :)...!

All the best!... ;)...!

I'm a HUGE fan of photorealistic scenery. I remember flying over Alexandria, Egypt, with and without photoreal scenery. The port area could just as easily been Baltimore without photoreal, but with the photorealistic scenery the mystique of the place came alive as I circled many times to get a feel for the port and its environs.

That said, this Kauai scenery is just fabulous. Years ago I flew for Oahu and Kauai Airlines (OK Air) in Cessna 402s. We hopped inland between Lihue and Princeville, and I just flew one of those routes with this new Kauai scenery and loved every minute of it. We used to hitch rides on Papillon Helicopter tours of Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon, and the cliffside details are very nicely rendered in this Kauai scenery.

Rich, I'm the author of Flying Hawaii: A Pilot's Guide to the Islands. Send me a PM if interested and I'll send you a complimentary copy of the book. Cheers for a job well done!

Papafox,

Thanks for the kind words concerning the scenery. It's great to know that my efforts yielded something that looks and feels authentic. Like you, I'm a fan of photoscenery because it can help to create a sense of place that FSX default scenery doesn't provide.

PM sent. :)

Rich:  Thanks for the hard work!  Found a Kauai mission last night, downloaded & installed the Kauai Photoscenery and it was a blast.

Just a quick question, as I'm fairly new to this:  My Mesh/Texture Resolutions are set for 10m/1m respectively.  Are there better settings to use with this (or any) Photoreal scenery other than those?
