Transfer FSX Activation?

Postby xtp » Sat Jun 05, 2010 10:59 am

Haven't found any posts on this topic, so I hope I'm not covering old ground.

Just about to get a new PC and want to transfer FSX to the new system.

I gather from trawling the web that you get just 2 activations per copy of FSX.  Is there a way to uninstall FSX that de-activates it so that it can be used on a new system without having to pay again if 2 activations have already been used?

And I have Accelration as as add-on to the original FSX DeLuxe.  Is there anything I need to know about uninstalling this combination that would affect re-activation?

I never heard of having "two" activations.
I reinstalled FSX more than that, and never had a problem.
Mind saying where you got that source?

Like the above said, just do it, if you have problems just phone Microsoft help line and explain the issue is upgrading.
This is what I did. The allowable different motherboards is two, as explained in the FSX eula. But it shouldn't be an issue. From what I've researched, MS will give you up to three keys in FSX without to much of a problem.

I had the same issue when loading on my new rig. I just called MS and they did their "voo-doo" on their end, and got a valid key. Due to a crash and reload on my old rig, I think thee times I installed on that one w/o a problem.

Just give MS support a call!

I should add to this, only some hardware changes affect your activation key. #1 is your motherboard, but there are others. You should be unlimited reinstalls on the same hardware.

I'm up to a fourth reinstall/reregister in 17 months......could it be they don't count towards anything if the reregister from the same IP addy?

Thanks for your inputs.

The source of my comment about 2 activations was the EULA at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927007, which implies at Q4 that there are only 2 activations per product.

I will try it when I get my new system and see what happens.

I'm not sure about FSX, but with Windows XP at least, even if the online activation fails, you can use the "activate by phone" option. If THAT automated garbage fails, you'll eventually be able to talk to a real person. If you explain why you need to activate it again, they'll usually end up giving you the activation code without issue. It's time consuming, but it works.

That's reassuring.  Thanks.

Much better, as other software vendors do, to include a facility to unactivate on uninstal so that it can be reinstalled on a fresh machine without hassle.  Otherwise it feels very like an OEM licence, which it isn't.
