DirectX issue with Acceleration in W7?

Postby microlight » Sun Apr 04, 2010 12:49 pm

Evening all.

I have the FSX Gold package, and have just installed it into my new Vaio laptop running W7 64 bit. While it runs FSX itself fine (even though the Vaio tells me that it has to temporarily downgrade the W7 graphics from 'Aero' to 'basic' in order to run it!), once I add Acceleration, I'm told that FSX will not now run as I'm using an incompatible version of Direct X, and wants to install DX9.0c! (W7 uses DX11.) If I uninstall Acceleration, it's OK again. Anybody with a similar experience?

Meanwhile my FS9 installation installed and runs perfectly!

Switching from "Aero" to "Basic" is normal for all FS versions running under Win7.

Install DX9.0c as advised. Win7 supports DX11, but the DX9 kernal included is incompatible with FSX Acceleration.

If I understand the following thread.. just install DX9, there shouldn't be any transverse issues that arise. I don't have windows 7, but FSX won't use DX11, of course.

Edit: I posted this not realizing you already had a reply.

Thanks for the responses, all.

Bill, I don't seem to get the switch from Aero to Basic when I run FS9, which seems odd.

I read the link that was included in one of the posts; Bill, are you saying that Acceleration wouldn't work even if I ran it in XP compatibility mode? Seems like a backward step to install DX9c - can it even be done? What kind of detrimental effects might it have on W7?

Anyhow, thanks for your comments, just learning all this. I have to say that I'm very unlikely to fire up FSX on a regular basis for pleasure flying (I'm a confirmed cigar tube/FS9 man!) as I bought it primarily for development of addons that would be FSX-compatible, so I guess the niceties of Acceleration may not be worth the hassle of messing about with Direct X...

There's no issues involved in installing DX9 .......... I've had to do it and so will many more as Windows7 spreads.

Fsx uses too much CPU and gpu power so windows vista and 7 switch to basic so the CPU devotes itself to fsx not aero

I have windows 7 I know

Thanks for the response, manesag. Have you installed DX9.0c?

There's absolutely no problem whatever running FSX+Acceleration under Win7 mode. In fact, there's no need to even run FSX under the "WinXP Compatibility" mode!

I've done only three things to the Desktop Icon's Properties:
1. Launch with Administrator account
2. Disable desktop themes
3. Disable desktop composition

There's also no problem whatever with installing DirectX 9.0c runtimes.

Bill,

I've downloaded 9.0c and have run the installer. Even though dxdiag says DX11 after installing the 9.0c runtime, Acceleration has installed and now runs fine!

Many thanks for your help.

Most likely you can't run DX11 anyway.  Most gfx cards DO NOT support it.  They may support 10, but (from my knowledge) there are only a few (very new and very expensive) that support 11.  DXDIAG will always say 11, but if you are like most people, you will never be able to use it.  It's kind of like installing DX10 on xp, but you can't use it.
