Tower Comms

Postby RickG » Wed Feb 17, 2010 2:09 pm

Hi all. I noticed that when I am flying around and tuned into a particular tower, I hear all sorts of messages from completely different towers, as well as the one I am dealing with.  I do have only com 1 selected on the radio.  That would not happen in the real world, would it? Seems very odd to me.

Yeah..  it's realistic..  You can be within the range of several aiports sharing the same frequency.

122.7  122.8   are VERY common.  122.8 can be like listening to a CB radio on a nice flying day..  >:(

Well, I never would have thought comms would work like that. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

Are you sure you're tuned to a tower and not something like New York or Boston Center?

Hi again. Here's what was going on. I was flying in Germany, and going to land at Dresden, and had already contacted the tower for permission to land, got the ok, and approach and runway info. Then I heard someone at Liepzig-Halle giving some flight clearance to taxi. Best as I understand all this, if I was tuned to the tower that close to landing, I should not have been hearing anyone else. At that point, am I not tuned into such an exclusive frequency?? I'm lost   :D

Usually a taxi clearance is issued by ground control and I have seen fairly adjacent towers using the same ground frequency.

Comm2 was my next guess as well.

Maybe I am confused about actual radio useage.  This flight was in the Cessna 172, and on the radio stack, only comm1 had a lit green light. Comm2 and BOTH were not lit up. If the indicator is not lit up, am I still gonna hear comms on that channel?

There's probably someone here more conversant with the operation of flight sim navcom radios and the audio selector switches - usually in a row above the radio stack.

Well, maybe I did have both comms going, tho I'm pretty sure not. I understand how I could hear two different freq's tho. Guess I will just do a bit of in-sim research if I get it again. Thanks for all your replies.

Rick,

It's in the sim.....

Checking the sim's airport details of both airports (EDDC and EDDP), both show a comm. freq. at 119.700.

Checking the freqs provided by ATC while flying:

EDDC-119.700 Ground and Tower

EDDP-119.700 Tower

Tuned to EDDC on approach, I could hear EDDP take off/landing clearence as well as EDDC clearance delivery. When close (<10nm) could also hear EDDC Ground.

With the airports only 60nm apart, you're going to hear cross talk....

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

AHA!!  That explains it then. I was going to go into the sim and check that myself, but you saved me the trouble. Whether it is factual or not, it does seem odd to have similar freq's in such proximity. Anyway, thanks heaps Dave.
