I can't find a thread and video on alpha-blend trees for FSX

Postby Tech Diver » Tue Jan 19, 2010 12:42 am

A few weeks ago I read a post in some forum (I think it was not here) about an effect that some one was implementing, that gradually faded trees in and out in FSX. He said that he had to temporarily abandon the project, but the video that he posted looked excellent.

Has anyone else seen this? If so, can you post the link?

OK, I finally found it. Check out this video that shows autogen trees gradually appearing in FSX:

(be sure to watch in high definition)

Here is the thread that discusses it:

...well I don't know... ::)...!

I find that if I set up realistic weather conditions, which normally includes low cloud, rain, mist, fog, smoke, etc, and set a realistic "visibility distance" in FS 2004, the Autogen scenery gradually comes into view as I approach it, automatically....

...like it does in real life.....NOT unlimited visibility!

That's because autogen drawing is done differently in FS9 than in FSX.

In FS9, scenery fades in and out of view using alpha fade, in FSX, it 'pops' into view because they dropped the alpha fade for some dumb assed reason ::).

But like you said, adjusting the weather & visibility can help this some, and it's just more realistic that way.

Turn the autogen down, way down, not much popping then!

I have it set to 100 for trees and 40 for buildings, and the shimmer is reduced too then, LOL!

I regulate the amount of Autogen I am flying over by studying the Google maps of the area in advance, and make a note of the time of year; colour and amount of vegetation at the time, amount of Buildings, etc, and alter it to suit...... :)...!

What a great idea, thanks...

I think both FS9 and FS10 are way over the top with regards to amount of trees and buildings per tile.

Is the default something like 4500 of both?

Any other good ideas from the "veteran +20000 posts"?! :)
