Any reason why the ILS would bring you down off to the side of the runway?

Postby Mr._Ryan » Wed Jan 13, 2010 6:23 pm

I was executing an ILS landing at Beijing (ZBAA), runway 36R. The ILS is 109.90, which I had in Nav1. The glide slope was fine, but where the ILS was telling me was the center line of the runway was in the dirt 20 left of the runway! I've had this happen more than once where the glideslope is fine, but I have to eyeball the runway because the ILS would have set me down off to the side (and actually come to think of it, both times it would have been to the left of the runway).

What gives?

They're not all lined up with the centerline. Check your approach charts before going in.

I think its one of those quirks of the Sim....

..or someone has wheeled the Transmitter Hut off to one side, whilst resurfacing the Runway over night... ::)...!

Paul...G-BPLF...FS 2004...FS Navigator...and a Tow-Bar.... [smiley=evil.gif]...!

.... ;D....!

The ILS for this runway is offset in the sim.

You'll need to review the chart (as another posted mentioned) to see if this offset is by design or a mistake.

Assuming it is by design, one reason for this may be due to obsruction(s) on the straight-in glide path preventing a straight-in approach.  In this case, you'll need to make the last minute correction yourself to line up with the runway and land on the centerline.

The localizer building is on the centerline, just off the departure end of the runway and the glideslope building is on the left side as you approach, about 100 yards or so from the approach end.

I looked up the ZBAA charts and it says nothing about it being an off center localizer. So I would assume (if you didn't install any new scenery) that it's an FSX glitch.

With 24000 airports its bound to happen.
