No Distance on My Glidescope

Postby westside » Sun Dec 27, 2009 2:21 pm

Just recently I have noticed that the distance from the marker is not registering on my nav screen. The glidescope is captured and working but like I said it is not giving distance. I have tried it on a few different aircraft and the all have the same problem. I have gotten to the point where I rely on this information and I don't have to use the GPS unit for this info.
It is still showing distances to high altitude VOR's
The only thing I can think of doing is repairing the program with the disks. Anyone else experienced this?

Did you previously have distance information on that particular ILS?  Not all ILS or VORs have a DME (the device that is needed for distance).

What he said, not   all beacons or ils systems have distance information, and when on GS is really irrelevant, just need to be sure your rate of descent is good and you will be ok.

I believe I had this information before. The runways that I am landing at are major airports and I would think that is relevent information. I do use that information as general way of configuring my aircraft for landing.

Even though distance to the airport while on an ILS is redundant.. (your altimeter is as good as a DME.. it's always aprox. 1 mile per 300agl).. it can be useful information when you aren't yet established.

Other sources of distance information can be a VOR/DME at the field.. or even an NDB at the outer marker.. And if you REALLY like having that distance information (which again is redundant, because ATC will give you a vector and altitude for intercept).. you can find a nice VOR radial that intercects the approach at a known distance (many of which will be noted on an approach plate).. or you can even use the DME from another VOR to monitor your distance (i.e. when I'm 44nm from THAT VOR, I'm, 23nm from the airport)

For future reference, the term is "glidesLope..."

...and no glideslope transmitter provides any signal other than vertical deviation.

The localizer transmitter likewise does not send anything other than horizontal deviation.

There will be a DME transmitter co-located with the localizer and gs equipment if the approach is certified as CatII or CatIII.

You really need to consult the relevant apt's runway charts to determine what equipment is installed...

...or open "Map View" and hover your cursor over the runway...

just out of curiosity, exactly what airports are you trying to land at that "appearently" do not have what you are looking for?  Maybe if you gave us that information we could check our Sims to see if there is really something messed up (which I doubt as it has all been explained) or to try to figure out a way to PLACE a DME at specified airports to give you the information that you seek.

Why not have him format his drive and reinstall his OS? It will be as much help as a repair install.

There is NO indication at this point that his sim is not working correctly - there IS an indication that this may be simply pilot error - a lack of understanding of the system.

Repair installs and reformats should only be used as a last resort after determining that the sim is the problem.
