Can't get textures to work on downloaded aircraft.

I for the life of me can't get any of the planes I download and install to come out right in FSX. I've tried the P-51 and the Corsair in several varieties, and none of the textures ever work. The texture files for all the "stock" fsx planes are .dds files, whereas the textures for these planes are all bitmaps. Could that be the difference? I also don't see any texture.cfg files for any of the downloaded planes, which may or may not also be the issue.

Basically they all fly, but they're just gray, unpainted aircraft. Is there something I'm missing here?

Sounds like these are FS9 aircraft. Try disabling DirectX 10 Preview from FSX settings.

I thought the same thing, they are all modifications of FS2004 planes and that might be the issue. But if I disable the DirectX10 Preview, will this reduce the quality of the rest of the game? Forgive my ignorance if this should be obvious.

The only way to find out is to try it. If it fixes your problem you have the option of re-enabling it for FSX aircraft.

I've heard that the DX 10 Preview is more of a gimmick than anything else.

Did the trick, however, now the canopy in the F-18 I downloaded is no longer transparent. Bizarre. But thanks for your help!

Glad I could help. As for that F-18, not all FS9 models will display properly in FSX + SP2.

Just tried the Corsair and she works like a beaut'! It's starting to seem that all of these FS9/FSX "modifications" have their quirks, though - the reflection of the prop (don't know how else to describe it) in the Corsair is a solid color at 12 o'clock out of the airplane, in other words, you can't see through the prop directly in front of you. Makes landing interesting

If you haven't tried it, the FSX Alpha Bleu Corsair on page 17 of the FSX vintage section here at Simviation has a prop fix as an additional download.
