At what altitude should you switch from IAS to MACH or is it variable?

Climb at normal IAS climb speed, till you reach cruise mach, then hold that mach number even if you are climbing.

Does it make much difference though? Or is it just the done thing?

I've never heard of needing to switch to .mach at a certain speed or altitude.

LOL , I know is for important heavies and general jets has it for a very important reason ,I mean at FL180 the indicator has to be switch from IAS to Match,  ::) but to be honest I never dear to ask ,but now that the subject is on ,why do we have to do that?  ::)

because mach is a more reliable speed indicator at high altitudes than ias is

IAS gets inaccurate at high altitudes due to thinner air
