I have no idea. I did lock up my computer a week or so ago while flying over some rocky, feature-laden  mountains. My video began to get choppy, then it just froze. Had to reboot to get out of it. I would like to know how to set the frame rate, if that is possible...

14-16fps sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Human eye just needs 10 fps for the image to look smooth.

Oh boy... let's not get into the "human eye fps" discussion again ;D

The problem in big cities are the building textures that are a little bit heavy, and ruin the FPS.
I believe you can limit the damage by reducing the "special effect" slider in the game settings.

Well, that's something I didn't try. Thanks for the tip.

But after posting this tread I fired up the sim again and found my average fps dropped to 11-13fps around big cities.

I'm gonna try as you suggested to see if I can get some better results.

Any time that you're testing for performance, it's best to restart the system before each test flight. This assures that all components are running fresh ;)

The "average FPS" really depends on your system and it's performance cababilities. as previously stated the FPS will be reduced in large airports with a lot of AI activity as well as heavy scenery demands and weather conditions. If it get's to the point where you're no longer flying smoothly then reduce those aforementioned factors.
Just a suggestion which has helped me and many others is NickN's FSX Setup Guide. Follow it to the letter you wont be disappointed. http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_p ... ?TID=29041

One more little item to remember is your altitude and groundspeed. In the default beech Baron at 2500 feet ASL and 120 knots over Los Angeles, with a bit of weather, I bounce between 15 and 20 fps. Slower gets me more frames and so does higher.
