Which free anti virus will give best result with FSX?

Postby volunteer » Tue Sep 29, 2009 3:53 pm

I run Avast on my Vista 32 - and its great. But I was wondering if there is an even lighter anti virus out there which takes even less of the computer resources.

-thanks

Avast is quite nice. I have installed it just like you, and everytime I launch FSX, I just deactivate the resident protection, which means that the antivirus does not use any CPU or hardrive ressources anymore.

I use NOD32 for which you pay, but I have heard lots of good things about AVGFreev8.5...

I use Avast as well, and I think it is pretty much the best one out there right now resource-wise.

I use Avira, much better user interface than Avast:

I'm kind of liking the new Microsoft Security Essentials.  In addition to being free, the definitions are updated three times daily...

I am using a free version of VIPRE  which I find that running with PC Tools Firewall Plus, which is also free. I do not have any conflict issues with any of the Flightsim programs or any of the other issues I have seen some anti-virus/firewall combo's can give.  I did previously have AVG 8.5 free but the database manager became corrupted and it caused the program to stop functioning, so I was left with no alternative but to un-install it and found it would not re-install because of the corruption. And having now run my combo for over ten months with no problems or issues, I will stick to the freeware versions, OK some do not have the full functionality of the paid ones, but they do a very good job for all that.     Cheers  Myk
