Newbie quesions...

Postby Air Canada » Sat Sep 26, 2009 11:24 am

My Computer
E8400 CPU with Asus P5Q Turbo motherboard 3.0Ghz
OCZ 4GB 800 RAM
1TB Sata Hard Drive
Radeon HD 4650 Video Card
Pro Flight Yoke System
Flight Simulator X
Windows x64 with SP2
500 Watts Power Supply

This is my new system. Is it good enough to run FSX cause I don't see much difference from my older P4 3.0Ghz system.
Maybe I'm not doing somehting right thats why I'm asking all these quesiton.

I've looked on youtube and I've seen the game so smooth and great graphics but for some reason mine doesn't come close enough..

This is what I ahve done to my new system so far.

Installed Win x64 and SP2 and updated from Microsoft's website all the updates.
Installed AVG 8.5
Installed all original CD/DVD drives that came with the motherboard and video card and other peripherals.
Then I installed my FSX game DVD.

When I start up FSX most of the sliders are set to max. So now when I go to free mission (or whater that is caled) I can fly and everything but the graphics don't look like what you see on youtube.

Next, what is this service pack 1 and 2. Is this different from windows Sp1 and 2 or ???

There are so much addons I see now for FSX. In order to get the game to look close to real, I hope I don't have to buy all those addons cause that will add up quiet a bit.

Do I really need to get addons or one can do without it.

I just figured out how to install planes but are they any big differences in freeware and payware.

So, someone can guide me to the correct steps as to what I need to get to make the game look close to real as possible. I do't want to go out and buy somehting that I don't really need and there's so much out there, I have no clue what to get.

thank for reading and you response.

Quite frankly if you are trying to run FSX maxed then you need at least a quad core. Even my system (specs in sig) has a hard time keeping up with FSX on the higher settings. I did do a flight to where I maxed everything out for laughs and giggles and I think I averaged about 14FPS ;D

But your system looks like it should run FSX at half-way decent settings.

It looks like it should run okay.

All four Stickies at the top of the FSX page would likely answer most of your questions. (Just in case you haven't seen them yet.) Nicks guides should work wonders for you.
Good luck!  :)

thank you alll for your replies as a few things got cleared up...

As for the stickies... I did try and read up on all the 3 stickies but damm so much info there and was getting confused where to start...

And I though since the sticky was posted in 2007 maybe there are new and simplier changes now...

anyways, i will take a look at the stickies one by one and hopefully it will all try to make sence since I'm begining to understand all this..

Thanks again for your suggestions and comments and i appreciate it...

O ya... forgot to mention... I'm getting FPS anywhere between 10 to 15 ... I guess thats pretty low.. isn't it for a system like mine..

in humble view I would mosey down to the hardwear forum of simviation and learn to over clock the cpu chippy. It does 3 at the mo = if you can get it up to 3.6 (which should not be too hard - then you have got much better frame rates for nothing! (or for the price of a better chippy cooler, which you may need for over clocking).

Just start here, Nick has updated most of his guides>

You may not need to defrag yet, but it's all there.
Overclock if you wish, but you will still need some of this info at the end of the day.
Once again, good luck!

Hi guys...
here's my latest info so far..

I did follow nick's guide exactly as mentioned there. Did do a clean install of win x64 and FSX. installed all Sp1 and 2 as stated.

I even downloaded O&O 12 defrag and defraged the hard drive..

but now the game is even more worse than before. I even lowered the sliders down to Low setting and graphics at 1024x768 32 and still I find the game running like a slide show.

My P4 2.8 is running this game a lot better with no tweaks at all.

And I didn't even install any add-ons yet. Yet using the defaults..

'm going to re-install x64 clean again and then install fsx again and see and post results..

anyway, thanks for all the suggestion... will keep trying and hopefully will get it right...
