Real-time weather

Postby RacingLad » Mon Sep 28, 2009 12:58 pm

I usually fly with real-time weather but I find it reduces my fps big time. I`ve done a lot of tweaking and tuned FSX to a very acceptable level of performance. I get around 35fps even on dense autogen. But real-time weather kills it; it brings down the fps to around 17-20.

I want to keep flying with real-time weather since it provides a lot of challenges to the flight.

Is there a way to tweak something to increase my fps with real-time weather?

Saludos y Gracias.

I used to fly real time, but I found the fps to be around 20-22. Even when settings were minimal...ish the fps were slower than stationary weather with high...ish settings.

Yes, you have two main things to do:
- reduce the cloud drawing distance to the minimum
- try to find some alternative cumulus textures in a lower resolution.

The real weather kills your FPS because it usually displays much more clouds (when the weather is bad) than a usual weather theme. Clouds require a lot of video card power, so if you install smaller textures, you will earn A LOT of FPS.

Give a try to those new FS9 textures, nammed HDE clouds. The cumulus textures is offered in several resolutions, from 1024 to 256, all in BMP 32 Bits or in DXT3. Try the DXT4 512 ones, or even the DXT3 256. You WILL notice a difference.

How compatible are those FS9 textures with FSX?

Cloud textures (Cumulus and Cirrus) are 100% compatible. I use them in my FSX Acceleration. Check the "Swedish love" topic I made recently in the freeware screenshot section.

Sky textures are NOT compatible.
=> I believe the sky textures are not compatible. When I tried using the FS SkyWolrd 2004 sky textures, it was no working at all, so I suppose those are not compatible either. BUT I have not tried. You can save your original files and give those a try.

I have not tested the envmap, so I don't know about this one.

I have not tested the ground detail, but maybe it works. I just don't want to test it, I prefer the original.
