New graphics card glitches

Postby ionstorm66 » Wed Sep 23, 2009 7:12 pm

I upgraded my graphics card to a ATI 4870 and now I am getting these glitches. If i reinstall my old card they go away. The card is not over heating. Any ideas why this is happening?

Did you update the drivers for the new card ?

If not, you can get the most up to date driver from the card manufacturer or a reputable site such as Guru3D.

Well I tested the GPU in another pc and it worked fine. Must be something in Flight Simulator as all my other games worked fine on that PC with the new GPU. Are then any problems other than the cloud glitch with new ATI cards like my 4870? BTW on my other pc I get 10 FPS in ManhattanX with max settings in my PMDG MD11 with Real Environment Xtreme 2 Gold. Which is crazy compared to the 2 FPS I get with the old 8800gts.

You need to tweak.
The default values that are put into the FSX.cfg when you delete it, or the old values that you choosed for your previous card, are NOT GOOD for the most modern cards.

You'll have to fine thune your Bufferpools, and your TBM.
Don't forget the autogen tweaks too. Those bugs will be gone as soon as you'll find appropriate values.

What should I set the bufferpool to for a 1GB Video card?

70 millions should be a good start value.
Then try more, like 150 millions. Or less. Just try different values.

You might even be able to go up to 400 million on a 1gb card

I originally thought it was a bufferpools issue, but I saw all the other glitches it had  :o

Yes, but I learned to be carefull with the Bufferpools high values. Sometimes they give good performance, but sometimes they also cause instability or glitches.

For example, when I set my Bufferpools too high, I get the dismembered planes problem.

Agreed. The same happens to me... I don't even use it any more... no need for it on my system thankfully. It's one less tweak I have to worry about. ;)
