Nick and Windows 7

Greetings Nick from the land downunder.  Because of you I have been able to stick to FSX and now with hardware upgrades really enjoy the experience ..  and also to realise how intrinsically excellent the programme is.
However throughout you have given the clear impression that those who moved to Vista were foolish, and most of your advice has been directed to XP systems.  At times I have agreed with you and nearly (paid) to go back to XP but now that I have the 64bit version running well with most of the unneeded bells and whistles turned off, I am happy with the OS.

My question (at last you say) is whether we can hope for advice on tuning and running FSX with Windows 7?  It does seem from all the reviews to be a trimmed and improved version of Vista, and certainly the OS that MS intend to invest in.

They corrected quite a bit with Vista in the SP's and now the OS does have value over the mess it presented in the past

My list DOES INCLUDE links to VISTA optimizing which basically sets it up the same as XP for better performance. Those elements were edited into that list a long time ago


As for W7.. what can I say. Its Vista being remarketed under another name and right now you are FAR better off on Vista64 than screwing with W7

Dont fall for the internet hype.. all the "I switched to W7 and everything is faster" is a bunch of horse-hockey

FSX runs no better/worse on any OS and there have been more people who I have personally assisted that went back to Vista64 after pulling their hair out with issues in W7



its like anything else with a new OS.. it needs 'soak time" and usually one and sometimes two SP's before its ready for primetime

I recently got a new gaming computer and installed Windows 7 RC on it and run FSX, and I am very pleased with the performance. It could use some tuning, but I am still happy with it. As to what you do to tune it and make it run the best, I can not say, yet...

I never moved from XP to Vista because of the hype about problems associated with FSX. However with my new build I decided to use 64 bit Vista Home Premium in lieu of XP. So far I have not experienced any problems for the several months it has been in use.

I agree, comparisons have shown that there doesn't seem to be any difference in performance from going from XP to Vista. However, there are improvements such as the time in booting up (about 12 seconds to boot up and 3-6 seconds for shutting down), larger and more detailed icons, a sound system more liking to my taste, nicer and easier to read fonts, and don't forget about Ready Boost. These are only a few of many improvements but simply stated, I just think Vista is more robust, and an attractive (pretty) OS. Now if W7 is an enhanced version of Vista, I would think after they have shaken out the kinks, the OS should be even better.

As far as performance is concerned and with my new rig, this is no longer an issue with me. And as I stated before, I have more than adequate for great flights anywhere in the world.

I was a little unfair when I claimed that you had done nothing for Vista users, but of course because you are an XP user there is no long, complete thread on tuning Vista and FSX as a running partnership. 

However your advice as I said at the start simply kept me using the game.  Without it I would have stuck to FS9.
