Scenery Installation Order

Postby DazzleStar » Sat Aug 22, 2009 4:43 am

I'm about to buy FSX Acceleration, and am going to do a fresh installation of FSX and all addons. I was wondering how I should go about installing scenery though? I'll list what I plan to install.

Hawaii:
MegaScenery Hawaii X
Aerosoft Dillingham X
Raimondo Taburet's Hawaii Mesh
The bottom three off this page: http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=Manny+mahadevan&CatID=fsxscen&Go=Search

Mt. Everest:
The bottom two off this page: http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=frank+dainese&CatID=root
Aerosoft Lukla X

New Zealand:
All of these: http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=Robin+Corn&CatID=fsxscen&Go=Search
All of Tim Barnes' stuff: http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=tim+barnes&CatID=fsxscen&Sort=Name&ScanMode=0&Page=1
And a mesh for Australia and New Zealand, can anyone recommend one? I've seen some on the first page of Simviation's meshes.

That's all I have planned, but I will get more if I see some nice stuff. Can anyone recommend anywhere? I'm also looking at replacing the default FSX meshes, especially in places where the resolution is about 300m!

Generally you built it up from bottom to top.
1st the mesh (although the mesh is independent from position in the library)
2nd the sceneries covering the larger area
finally the smaller sceneries that go on top of the larger area

If you see anything is messed up, you can still move things up and down in the scenery library.

Question 1: which would be bigger, Lukla X or Frank Dainese's Everest?
Question 2: because MegaScenery has its own mesh, shall I put it below the mesh I downloaded so it shows the one I want?

Thanks for the help.  :)

Question1: good one - I don't know, but I would guess that Frank's scenery covers a greater part around the everest mountain and that the Lukla airport will be outside this region (haven't installed Frank's scenery myself). When you have installed both, you can easily change the order with the move up / move down options in the scenery library.

Question2: As far as I know mesh works differently than other scenery. FSX should always display the highest resolution mesh independently of the order in the scenery library.

Ok, thanks, thats pretty much cleared everything up. I'll just have to wait and see if it works!  :D

DS,

This is just a general observation, and not specific to any of your intended installs.

Mesh priority is different than other scenery. As ManuelL stated, the sim will always use the highest resolution mesh installed for any area regardless of it's position in the scenery library priority.

However....if you have installed 2 or more mesh that cover the same area, with the SAME resolution the sim will use the one LOWER ( farther down) ON THE PRIORITY LIST.

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

Ahhh, now thats interesting. Both the MegaScenery mesh and Raimondo's mesh are 10m. So, I'll put Raimondo's lower to achieve the setup I want. Thank you!  :D
