Freeze when opening main instrument panel

Hi there everyone, I stopped playing FSX about 3 months ago, then I just tried it again today. To my disappointment, however, when I try to open up the main instrument panel, this large black box shows up on my screen, (with about 5 pixels of the rest of my screen showing on the left and top) with the entire game frozen, except for it's sound. If I wait for about a minute, it crashes and asks to send an error report. I have installed the SP1 and SP2 for it. Here's some other hopefully helpful info:

-GFX: Nvidia 9600 GT w/ 1GB
-2GB Sys Memory
-Windows XP Home w/ SP3

If anyone has a solution or needs any more info, please reply!

I've never seen that before, but what you could try is renaming your FSX.cfg, and then restart the sim.  It should re-write a new .FSX.cfg file.  If the new .cfg doesn't help, you can restore the original .cfg file.

Thank you for your reply. I am looking through my Flight Simulator X folder right now, but I am not seeing any fsx.cfg file. Are you sure that's how it's spelled?

Check the FAqs at top of forum 'Location of fsx.cfg'

Yes.  But it's not in the main FSX folder, it's tucked away as a "user file"

For Vista, it's located at...

Desktop\*username*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX

Im not sure of where it's at if you're using XP, but supposedly:

C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX

Ok, thank you again. I tried it, but that didn't fix it. I did however, learn that the panel only seems to not show in jets, or planes with extremely large panels. The panel was able to show in the trike.

Well, I can be in the virtual cockpit of the trike fine, but the game does freeze when I try switching to the VC of those jets. I think I may be able to start out in them, though.

Try switching *to* the jets from the Trike when it's in the VC mode, of save the trike flight while in the VC mode.  From there, every time you start the sime, whatever AC you choose should start in the VC view mode.

Well, my actual goal here is to get the main panel up. VC mode is just another view to me. Infact, when I was in the trike, and I tried to open the main panel, the game froze again, with a black screen except for the menu bar @ the top. This is getting very weird.

If it's all aircraft except for the trike or aircraft with small 2D panels, and unless someone else can come up with something, I'd try a remove-reinstall at this point.  If the sim worked 3 months ago, something must have gotten corrupted between now and then.
