FSX stutters during turns

Postby Blaster79 » Sun May 10, 2009 5:17 pm

Hello all, after reading tons of posts about FSX tweaks i still didn't managed to remove stutters during turns. My pc is a Q6600@3,2ghz, 4 Gb DDR3 RAM, 8800GTS 512, a SATA 3,2gb/s disk 7200rpm and Vista x32. While i obtain smooth straight flight on almost every condition (even on densely populated area, stormy weather, etc) everything goes to mess when i make a turn. The sim has big and small stutters. This happens even when i'm leveling the plane after a turn. I must say that this doesn't happen always, for example a 360

Try the FSX Limiter thingie.  It governs the FPS more than limits it.  I had many of the same issues you post.  Set up the Limiter thingie and most of the most annoying stutters went away.

Try it, you'll like it!

Hey Blaster,

First of all, welcome to Simviation ;)

I'm sorry to hear about your problem. As I read the title, I immediately thought that BUFFERPOOLS would fix the problem. Unfortunately, that's not working for you. I would also have recommended the FPS_Limiter, but you've already tried that. Besides these tweaks, there's not much I can say besides play around with your TBM setting.

Either way, let's take a look at your FSX settings to make sure everything is where it needs to be for your hardware. Post your settings (remember to upload pics to the simviation site first, here). I would also recommend starting with a new fsx.cfg file (delete it, and run FSX to write a new one) and test with different TBM numbers, then with different BUFFERPOOLS. Only those two tweaks.

There's not much I can do to help you, so we'll have to wait until someone more knowledgable like Nick jumps in here to check it out.

Best of luck,

Andy ;)

Thank you for your replies and for the welcome!

My FSX settings are identical to those specified by Nick on this post (http://www.simforums.com/forums/printer ... ?TID=29041), except that i have ground details and autogen configured to dense and no ground/ship/air traffic at all. On FSX.CFG i only touched wideviewaspect=true, TBM=70 and bufferpools=10000000. My Nhancer settings are the same of that post, and i'm using the latest NVIDIA driver 185.85.

there is one mistake right there....

your tuning is messed up

you are assuming no traffic = better results for one.. thats a big mistake

My tuning list is very specific in telling you what to set based on the system being low-med-high and I expect people to not try to go outside that

So what you are doing is slamming it with autogen and scenery but killing the traffic threads which is throwing the balance of the sim off to your hardware

Bufferpools on 512 cards is really worthless.. remove that entry

Is this FSX SP2? If it is your 4GB is being used, if not 2GB is sitting there doing nothing for you

A Q6600 @ 3.2Gig is AT BEST a medium setup

Same settings I show in the thread except

Scenery Complexity VERY DENSE (one notch less than 100%
Autogen DENSE (can try VERY DENSE) but never 100% on that rig
AL/GA traffic 25%
Airport Vehicles LOW
Cars 5% - this can be zero
Ships/Boats both 15-20%

the 185 drivers are CRAP.. either use 180.48, which is what I use for my 8800 tower, or 182.50

Hello Nick,

i wasn't blaming your settings and i'm sorry if you tought this... with your tweaks i (and all the community) achieved very much from FSX!!

Yes, i've SP2 installed.. I closely followed your advice and switched back to driver 180.48, then changed the

settings as you suggested. Now the stutters are less noticeable as they seems more quick (and a bit more frequent) than before. It's all a little smoother but they are still there.

I had little time to try further tweaking, i'll do more this evening. Any other changes that i should try?

you using REX 4096 clouds and the 4096 entry in the config?

If so get rid of them 4096 entry in the config and make it 1024..

Be sure to kill all the UTX night lighting on that system, not just main roads but intersections too.

And be aware with that system.. unless its DDR3 if you are trying to trim out stutters in clities and around large forests its going to be problematical.

Yes i am using REX with max_texture_load of 4096. I already did the UTX tuning (night lighting OFF!), but i will check again in case i missed something. I've also cloud9 xclass europe (landclass changer) and some various improved textures.

The disk is half full and it's fully defragged with smartplacement from PerfectDisk.

With infinite numbers i mean that i followed your rules but also tried to change settings by my own.. without success. Also tried to stop background programs, disable sidebar, and every kind of mess that you can find everywhere on every flight sim forum ;-)

Affinitymask is not in the config file... should it be there?

PS: i have 4x1GB Corsair dominators DDR3 tested at 1800mhz..

How are you running DDR3 1800 @ 3.2GHz on a Q6600?

and my list says.. do not substitute O&O defrag for another defrag tool

Disk past 1/2 full?

there's another whammy especially if not using name defrag and O&O

I just wanted to know if you were using affinity mask or not at this point.. may have you add it.. not sure yet

no, they are running at 1600 (400 FSB x 4) at 7-7-7-22.

The cpu multiplier is 8x

i dont' remeber exactly now how was the occupation of the HD.. maybe 140GB free or 160 on a 300Gb disk.

This evening i will change settings and do more tests.. i'll let you know. Thank you!

I was planning to buy the Western Digital VelociRaptor 300Gb and replacing the 8800GTS 512 with a GTX285 (the first is only for FSX, the video card is also for other games who need it   ;)). What do you think about this? Will i got more stutters?  ::)

A 285 will help but its going to be pushing more than that CPU can handle. Can you not obtain a 3.6GHz clock?

I assume you are running a 400FSB and set to a CPU STRAP of 333 right now. With the right heat sink the Q66 will do 3.6 which is much more in line with DDR3 1600

At that point the 285 will be fed a bit better

I use Vraps but if you are not going to use the right defrag solution even what they provide will be limited. Its a combination of the drive technology along with optimizing the file system for MSFS use

Hmmm... i'm using a STRAP of 400, not 333... do you think 333 is better for my system?

I'm currently unable to push more than 3.2ghz because of temperature.. i need a new monster cooler (i'm still using the default cooler.. step G0 rulez)  ;)
