Auxilliary Power Unit.
It is an additional jet engine found on many jet aircraft, particularly air transport category planes, that is used to power a generator to supply the aircraft with AC/DC electricity (mainly) while on the ground but not connected to a ground cart or gate supply. It also can supply bleed air to run the packs and to use to start the main engines.
It can also be utilized in an emergency in flight (they usually have altitude restrictions with them) to power some systems.
It provides no thrust involved in the actual flying of the plane.
Unfortunately, in fs2004 Microsoft forgot that they exist.
