Dumb question

how do you turn off dx10  cant find it anywhere in settings?

Actually, in FSX DirectX 10 is turned off by default... you have to activate it before you use it...

and mind that it's only a 'preview'... it's not a complete DX10 implementation

Maybe you don't have the option available......

If your setup does not meet the DX10 Preview requirements, the option won't be available. I believe the requirements are: Vista, a DX10 graphics card and drivers, FSX with SP2 or Accel. installed.

If DX10 Preview is available the option is a checkbox at Settings>Display>Graphics tab>under 'Global Options'.

ok i have vista and accel but my graphics card is crappy so that makes sense
                  acceleration kills fps then right?

Not necessarily...

Acceleration, or the SP2 patch, are known to give a tremendous boost in performance, since they address many issues that caused bad perf in the default version
