AGEIA PhysX anyone?

Postby cardinalbrian » Wed Apr 15, 2009 7:19 pm

I got a replacement box from Dell with an AGEIA PhysX card in it.  After upgrading the  "found" VISTA Home Premium to Ultimate I had to reload everything.  When I use the Hat Switch to change views I now get a complete Window repaint that takes 4-5+ seconds.  I'm assuming this is an impact of the PhysX card, because I find it even on a clean install of just vanilla FSX.   Anybody have experience with this device.  Or another explanation for this behavior?

Pretty much a waste of time. FSX does not utilise it and i doubt that there are many games out there that do. Nvidia utilises the GPU to process Physix and the drivers are included in the GPU driver. As for ATI I am  not sure. But as i said FSX does not utlise any physix processing so unless ther is anything utising it i would remove it. Physix was the first but it never took of and the card manufacturers will not pay for what they can do themseves.

mjrhealth,

Thanks many.  Removal of the card returned FSX to it's expected behavior.  Now I'll finish the updates and installation.

I have the ATI  HD3870X2 linked via Crossfire for video support, and I guess the NVidia doohickey just didn't fit..

Your response was right on target, thanks again.

If I'm not mistaken, Nvidia bought out AGEIA a while back and integrated their PhysX engine to their GPUs... from the 8 series up, every Nvidia GPU should support PhysX now  ;)

only thing is that FSX makes no use of it, nor do most games so far...
but some games, like Ghost Recon, are using PhysX for some effects

Cheers

Well, all is not as well as I wished.  I did remove the PhysX card, but that didn't cure all the problems.   Instead of the hat switch acting as hat switches are supposed to act in my universe, mine has 2 , both undesirable, modes of behaviour in FSX.  It works right in CSF, which I just installed.  Mode 1 moves the view around under control of the switch as if you pan (move continuously without jumping) with your eyes.  Might be neat, but I don't like it.  Mode 2 seems to refresh the whole window to the view the hat switch selects - taking up to 6 or 7 seconds in the process!  For the time being I'm just practicing approaches, so it doesn't bother too much since I'm only looking at the panel.  But when I just want go pretend my Cardinal is on the West Coast or Tibet, I'd like the switch to just switch views to the selected sector and back off the ding-a-linging..  Any suggestions?
