Trees, are they really the problem? Nick?

Postby jwenham » Mon Mar 02, 2009 6:46 pm

Last week I participated with a few others and Nick with the problem of trees at very dense or extreemly dense settings in certain areas. Today I was looking around for a different airport to fly around from and came across VTSP - Phuket Int.

Very interesting find. I am going to test this right now and post back with my results when I'm done.

I went back and retested the areas in question and although it does not remove all the stutters it sure flys alot smoother in a season other than winter.

Just a thought...I see a big perf. hit from the 'fx_WheelSnowSpray.fx', in external views, to the point that I have disabled it. The problem is it happens on any surface during winter, regardless of the surface condition, so can't be avoided.

Cessna, please read the guidelines regarding the size of signature and avatar pictures.

As for the subject in question...

I did some testing around Phucket Intl and found that there was not much of a difference in winter/summer textures. I did not try any other season, but I highly doubt it would affect the performance as much as it has yours.

I also tested more around PAKT in both winter and summer and found no difference. This was of course with the autogen slider at 'very dense.'

I think Nick topped it all off with his explanation in the hardware/tweaking/OC forums (whichever one it was). It's just the way the sim is designed to render autogen. I think all areas of the world are going to be different depending on the landclass around that certain area and your system. That is probably why Nick mentioned that there is no "one size fits all" setting for FSX.

So you saw no better performance in summer at PAKT? It sure was night and day for me. I did still get a few stutters but not nearly as many as I did using the winter season.

I saw no difference, no. I forgot to mention that I had frames locked at 30. I got no stutters at all on either season, but of course the frames did drop a bit in certain spots over the island, down to maybe 23-25. It was still very smooth though.

I doubted that textures would make such a big difference, especially because we are both running GEXn. Did you try both of the seasons under the same weather conditions and at the same time of day? That could also play a factor in this.

Ive not been able to do the do with FS for a while.  Moved states and all, started a new job and had surgery for a bad back.  Currently home on medical leave recovering.  Catching up on the simming.

Came across this thread and, while slightly off topic, I beleive my observation has some bearing.

I was gonna OC my machine but got ambushed by the move and all.  Instead am gonna work with stock clock and see what I can do with the thing.

I decided to ignore ALL perf issues for external views.  Ive been setting and testing for the best perf and view from inside the cockpit.  What with Nick's optimize, nHancer, AlacrityPC, etc., I am getting some awesome (for my machine) perf out of the rig.

My point is that Ive concentrated on one, and I believe the most important, view.  The out-the-cockpit view.  Others might benefit from this approach?  Perhaps?

The Bad Penny is back...Sort of.
