The future of Flight Sim

Postby cavity » Sun Feb 08, 2009 6:36 pm

I just read over at another popular site that indeed, FS as we know it is completely dead.  No more ACES, as we already knew, ESP is offcially done with, and MS plans to move to Windoes Live as its basis for flight sim.  Attempts to purchase the code base from MS were denied.  It explains the ramifications of this, ie, 3rd party submissions for approval and sale to interested customers, probably the end of freeware liveries because money will be exchange, and many other detrimental effects.  Truly a sad day, not only for FS, but for PC's in general.

I have followed both of those threads, what was interesting in the new facts at the other site is that MS would be moving it to Windows Live platform.   I would hate to have to register to play a game and pay a monthly subscription rate.  This is the news that caught me by surprise.

All this talk has really got me to thinking. I've got a lot of myself invested into the MSFS community.

I'm also an avid user of the Steam (Valve) type of gaming. That type of game (DoD, CS) works because it IS multi-player and HAS to be 'live'. The idea of having to log into a MS site just to fly my airplanes, doesn't work for me.

I always thought it was curious, that MS

I personally will stick to FSX and the add-on developers big time. Like it has been said, FSX still have plenty of life in it and ample of opporunity for both free & payware creators.

I will stick with my FREE FS with super quality free & payware.

I will continue to support both free & payware creators who create addons for FSX.

As for Microsoft, online game for live? I am sorry, you lost a customer here w.r.t expactations to get my money for future projects w.r.t FS.

Let the underground simmers emerge

like i mentioned before, maybe microsoft can't stand other people making money on their product....but to me, that is one of the most beautiful things about fs.....ms has their brilliant staff who created the sim...but they may have their limitations too?...the way the sim is now...... some guy, or likely, kid down the block, may come up with a brilliant innovation to enhance the game....and someone else...and someone else.....this is a participaction which opens unlimited ideas and resources..that's whats so great about microsoft flightsim....the sharing....where everyone benefits....a blueprint for the future....
am i naive or what?

Why do microsoft have to change their way...  I will always stick with the flight sim which is the most realistic (i.e. if its becomming a game then count me out)

Microsoft... if your reading this, just letting you know your about to lose another customer [ FS11  COUNT ME OUT ]

Bill,

I agree, we arent sure of the facts.   I had just read the info at AVSim, and it seems to come from former ACES members, so it appeared to valid info from a respected site.  I truly believe that MS wants a situation that pays for the continued development, I can understand that, but Im not sure its a model that I will be interested in.  If MS wants continued revenue, they should buy the companies producing the payware.

Fair enough, but I'd prefer to be informed myself!

That goes without saying..

All I got to say is that FSX is just fine with me, By the time they get it back together the next sim should be like a compact one that you can put together in like a garage, you know like what they train real pilots with, and if I win the lottery I might buy it! I'm saving My dough for real wings! And I'll always have FSX for rainy days!
