numbers are relative... but a million sales is a good figure no matter where

my guess is that MS would shut down FlightSim because it's a segment where they have NO real competition, and there's still a lot of juice to be extracted from the current iteration... thus, ACES was something they could easily put on hold, since the FlightSim market will be there when they get back

and, in a way, they might even be right... i've had FSX for some 2 years now, but my hardware still doesn't cut it, and i have never seen the sim run at max sliders

this will give time for the hardware to catch up, and until it does, FSX will still have some juice in it

the need for a new iteration will only be felt when we feel that FSX is limited in aspects that a newer version wouldn't be, such as the graphics being deemed unrealistic or outdated (which i don't see happening soon) and until then, FSX will still be a very good platform for our addons and will provide many years of simming for us

for me at least, what makes the sim FUN is the part that least has to do with MS... as long as there will be addons, FS will be fun and ever new... and that's all that matters to me

Oh come one, we all know that Flight Simulator is the very REASON for Microsoft's existence.  DOS, Windows, Office, etc  are all just software supporting Flight Simulator!  It is merely a smokescreen by Microsoft to have closed ACES Studios.  In a macbre sense of the sublime ludircrous, the Illuminait have chosen the core and essence of the ACES studios to take over Microsoft...!!!

(sigh - I wish it were so.....)

Well...

If there was an Apple Flight Simulator and it was growing in popularity.. I would bet they probably would have pulled the plug on everything else in games and moved it to the FS division

Competition and market share usually trumps the recommendation of the bean counters when the numbers hit the CEO's office

A million sales is not a high number for a game, especially since the dev costs are going through the roof. Heck some developers consider a million sales a failure.

There is an Apple flight simulator, although, I think it still has a way to go to get to where MSFS is:

I don't think it's even close. I would love to see an APPLE developed product. I imagine that the graphics would be amazing.

X-plane has always touted itself as being more technically accurate than FS and there's some truth to that.  However, X-plane graphically is nowhere near on the level of FS.  X-plane is a much smaller community and has less to offer as far as add-ons go.

I have both FSX and X-plane 9 and I'll stick with FSX, but having said that, Austin Meyers must be enjoying himself very much right now...

It would be nice to see this kick off a new age of Flight sims like back around 2000.  Remember Fly!, Pro-Flight, etc.?  ;)

Jane's WWII Fighters is still one of the best combat flight sims ever...

i don't know if anyone remembers... around 98-99... there was Pro Pilot!!

graphics were much above those of the current interation of FS back then... and when you crashed, the cockpit would look all destroyed  :D

man, that was so long ago... i remember i learned to fly IFR on ProPilot... i remember also they had a nice Beech Bonanza

maybe we're about to see a new age of these small sims

Cheers

On the plus side, your decision to learn/use GMax just got a lot easier! No one needs to worry about GMax becoming "unsupported" by FS...  8-)

I know there are members here who use Facebook...

This is a group, aiming to get 100 000 fans of FS to join to show their support for ACES.
