Clouds not drawing...

Postby Jeff.Guo » Fri Jan 02, 2009 1:58 am

...I have Vista 32, Acceleration, and REX 4062x4062 clouds loaded up, and since yesterday, FS won't render any clouds, regardless of my location for some odd reason. I already tried reinstalling the theme through REX, but didn't work...

...and since then, the only things that I have changed are tweaks to the fsx.cfg and installed VFR+ Utah (actually, I think I still had clouds after the fsx.cfg tweak...)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

4096x are way too huge if you ask me...

Have you edited the TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD in the fsx.cfg to 4096?

It's 1024 by default, and changes back to that each time you change a graphics setting.

I have, it actually reset itself back down to 1024, so I had to fix it manually (one of the reasons for the tweak)...

What FSX.cfg tweaks?

And provide system specs. It may simply be that you have run out of VRAM and no amount of faffin or fiddlin' is going to solve that problem.

You have to increase your Cloud Draw settings and Density settings in FSX. They didn't show up for me at first and then they did after I bumped up the setting. Be warned though: they take a pretty big hit on the frames. Try the 1024 DXT5 clouds or 512 clouds. I use 512 DXT5 and they look just fine. ;)

Just about everything is maxed out in the settings...

...I got a nVidia 8600m GT, 4 Gbs of ram, and a Centrino Duo T7700

...and as for the tweaks, I bumped up the Texture bandwidth, the LOD_radius, and some other things that can't remember right now...

Thanks,
Jeff

..then you have exceeded the capacity of the computer and will never get the clouds to display properly until you return the FSX.cfg and slider setting to realistic levels for your rig.

It's not an `as well as` with these 4096 clouds. you can have them, but ONLY if you are prepared to make compromises to settings elsewhere or else FSX will make the decisions for you.

That's what has happened here.

Well, the way that I see it, FS has at least 3.5 gigs worth of video/system RAM to play around with at any given time, so I don't think I have 'gone over' the limit yet...

...plus, I don't think the problem existed, until after I installed VFR+ Utah...

Anyways, I'll check on it later, disabling Utah and then setting the clouds to a lower resolution...see if either fixes the problem.

Thanks,
Jeff

...oh, and I get a persistant 15-25 FPS anywhere (except the Flight1 S-80, I don't know why, but that thing runs like absolute crap on my computer...)

Ok, maybe I did push it a little...

...toned down the autogen, and everything's back to normal... :)
