FSX BGL Compiler not working!

Postby fireboss » Sat Dec 13, 2008 8:48 pm

I recently changed my operating system to Win.VISTA Home Premium 64. I re-installed FSX, and all of the Service Packs up to SP2. I Also updated the SDK TO SP2, and have the Tool function active in the Free Flight selection of the sim. I have LOM,RWY12,Object Manager,FSX_KML, AI Flight Manager and AFX all working correctly. My problem starts when I try and manually generate a BGL Scenery file with the BGL Compiler in the SDK. I am trying to set some Chimney Smokes in a Scenery at Campbell River Seaplane. The Compiler generates the BGL to the "Mother" folder, and when I put it in the Addon Scenery folder it doesn't show up in the Scenery! I have been setting these "smokes" for several years now and I am at a loss as to why this won't work. Any help with this problem would be much appreciated. Ken

Can you clarify a couple of things please.

1. Your heading says the BGL compiler does not work - yet later in the message you indicate it does generate a BGL.

2. Exactly where are you placing the new BGL - in the scenery subfolder of your Addon scenery folder?

David, thank you for the reply. After the BGL was generated I entered it into a working Scenery folder in the AddonScenery section. I also tried a Scenery Object XML with the same results. this is the instructions for the smoke effect.....................................................

I am sorry I did not try this earler. I just went into the Special Effects folder and pulled out the sample ForestFire example XML and with Notepad changed the location. Dropped it over the compiler and got my BGL. I had to add the effect to the Effects folder, and then dropped the Scenery BGL into my Campbell River Scenery with the same results! Ken

Boikat, the BGL file should be in the folder that you copied from, to drop onto the compiler. It returns to the folder that it started from, if it was successful. Ken

Thanks.  It's not being successful. :P

Dave3u helped a bit with a "compile.bat" instructions so I could see what it was doing (screenie in the "scenery and panel" topic).  It looks like I got a few bugs to work out, hunt down, and step on.   :)

Ken,

Compiled your original 'ChimneySmoke' xml with the FS9 Bglcomp SDK, placed the .bgl in FSX\Addon scenery\scenery\ and the smoke appeared as expected.

Could it be that (if you're using it) the FSX Bglcomp does not compile the
Just a thought....

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

Thank you for trying out the XML. I wounder what version XML will work. I even tried the Forest Fire sample int the SDK, and it would not show either.  Thanks again Ken

This has no bearing on the validity of the XML.

I took the code above, made it readable, repositioned and compiled. Two smoke plumes at Hagerstown airport - KHGR in FSX.

I am NOT using Vista and can't help but wonder if it's yet another problem related to that OS

I also do not use or recommend using the \Addon Scenery folder in FSX. This folder "should" work 100% of the time. Key word is "should"! Make a new folder for the work you generate and activate in FSX. Then place your BGL files there. At least then you'll have some hope of them showing up.

But it's still looks like a Vista problem. You didn't install FSX and the SDKs into the Program Files folder, did you?

Meshman, thank you for the response. When I had Vista Home Premium 32 SP1 installed on my system, and had FSX SKD installed in it's default location up to SP1a, I could generate that XML into a working BGL all day long. I just backed every thing out(SDK), and tried re installing with the same out come! The default location on my drive is Program Folder(x86) and up to this point have had no problems with default locations.

Meshman, you were dead on by telling me to move the BGL to an other Scenery Folder. The Scenery Folder I was using must have become to large to handle all of the "Smokes" I had generated in the last year and a half. So thank you again for the help.
