Sorry Gilly I have never come across this problem before, but it sounds that you need to free up, or allocate that drive some more free space before defrag can complete it's task. Can you uninstall some unwanted programs or use a program like partition magic to make more room on there?

Nick didn't run off.  There is an explanation in the Cafe.

What happened is over and as Mobius said, he left a message with the site administration which was posted in the Cafe area of these forums.

He said explicitly that he did not want anyone assuming anything and to not bring any hostility into the forums because of his decision.

I saw what happened and although it was quite obvious it was done intentionally, NickN said he had carefully considered taking an extended leave from the forums and I do not think he was

I did all the settings as your instructions, but when I came to the point :
Download this package from Microsoft, I found it is for Windows 2000.
I am using Windows XP Pro and is it OK to install it and continue the rest?

WindowsXP is based on Windows 2000. That is why you may see  drivers will be listed for Win2k/XP or Win98/ME. The tool you are installing was designed for WindowsXP/2000

It does not install any .dll files. All it does is allow easy access to the performance log and counter systems that are constantly running in the background even if the main service is shut down fron the services list. The only reprisal from using the tool is the loss of CPU cycle monitoring for external programs such as speedfan or other 3rd party software that may visually display or monitor the CPU useage. The Windows Task manager is not affected by shutting down the counters and will continue to display CPU usage just fine.

Nick:  your advice is excellent, and I was wondering whether you or someone has, or will, adapt it for Vista.  I don't think the essentials are different but there are some differences in names and locations.  I am grateful that professionals such as yourself put the time into helping us bunch of amateurs - but because of you and others we know our computers much better. Thanks,

on the other hand.......  since day one I have run Vista 64 bit with FSX on 1 gig of DDR memory on a non dual core 3000 and only a Geforce 7300 GS Video Card.  Runs perfect in both OS and FSX, I run FSX in XP Pro too, as a comparison both run no better no worse than each other.  The Vista version just loads the menus a lot lot quicker, even though the XP Pro is running on 2 gig DDR2 memory and dual core.  I am changing the dual core machine to Vista, I have independant advice from people already running the machine that it is aok.  Luckily I have Deluxe and Standard versions, 7 puters including a Mac, so I can make comparisons myself.  When the imlementations are made for dual core by the SP1 patch for FSX then it may be a totally different story, only time will tell.  At the moment I`m 100% happy with my changes.  MY OS has already had the Dual Core patch applied from MS.

I stumbled into this forum by random chance, to find that Nick N and others have produced by far the best guide to tweaking for FSX I have ever encountered.  Also in this thread and the FSX and SLI thread Nick in particular has taken the trouble to educate us/me on how the game really works.  For instance I never knew that the autogen problem was foliage not buildings, so I shall restore the original autogen (but still run the photographic trees) and similarly for other things. Thank you all for a great basic course in computing 101.  I would be interested in whethet this holds for Vista and whether things are in the same place under the same names, and I am still looking for the answer to Krigs question, how to disable autoplay.  But it is a phenomenal guide, and I now have a clearer picture of the workings of the game and its interaction with the OS.

Whoops, I see that Nick has answered the Vista question already.  I have the E6700 and 4 gigs of fast RAM with an 8800 card so the game is actually really running well.  Its when flying over urban areas with advanced cockpit aircraft that there is still a drag that I would like to relieve.  And I will leave the innards of Vista alone to the clearly needed SP turns up.  Meanwhile I shall reinstall the original autogen, and modify some of my tweaks.  Thanks

Bump...
I've just followed Nick N's advice to the letter throughout this thread and can honestly say my PC has never run so smoothly.

Cheers Nick!
