[quote]Nick I need your help!!

I was going through your processes, couldnt do some of the IE stuff as ive upgraded to IE7 and couldnt find the delete offline content box but no biggie.

The real problem started when doing the first O&O defrag.

I set it up just like you said and let it run for hours, maybe four or five.

[quote]Hi Nick,

Sorry I didn't get to you sooner, I get very busy sometimes, you know how it is.

Yes I can confirm that when I load up Acronis Disk Director straight from a CD, (not from inside Windows) I am able to browse inside all available partitions and copy, paste, delete, and make new folders and as well as delete all the MFT files and folders to my hearts content, oh and edit files.

I still think partition magic might be more flexible than Disk director as I cannot convert a drives format from lets say fat32 to NTFS etc, I think you can convert from FAT16 to FAT32 and back again though, but the only way of converting a partition to another format is to merge it into another partition which is already in the format you want. In future versions it should be possible to convert existing partitions to other formats and they are going to make it VISTA compatible. You still can resize, split, create, merge, change cluster size etc just like partition magic. But I suppose the development of partition magic is stopped now, making Disk Director much more appealing that

Thanks for all your help Nick great, I have FSX running smoother now. I might experiment a little bit running FSX on fat32 and see whether it is better.

I have done what you have suggested regarding O & O defrag and shading, those grey blocks are showing up as orange, directories.

Just clarifying Disk Director again for you. I cannot delete the MFT files in Disk Director from within windows they would just appear again straight away, I have to do it by running DD by booting on a CD in DOS.

Is there a defrag program I can run in DOS so all I have to do after deleting the MFT files is run the defrag program to push everything up to the beginning of the drive. Because it does take quite a long time to split and rejoin partitions when there are already files on them.

Thanks Nick, I will get on it!!

I have had sound problems with my laptop since i got it over a year ago.  Sometimes when I play mp3s or games (Basically anything that uses sound for a long time)  the computer runs very slow and stutters and eventually crashes with a blue screen saying that it is performing a memory dump or something like that.  I mentioned it to a programmer and he seems to think i need to wipe my harddrive (he said anything to do with a blue screen usually means u need to wipe your hard drive).

could this be the source of my problems?  I think my laptop may have a power setting to turn off resources after a while so i will disable them.  thankyou!

Roger that on DD...

As for defrag... nope, none that I am aware of. It would be nice but I think the Windowws API is needed to ensure everything is moved without problems.

HEy again nick,

i have completed the first two SPACE defrags on my C drive and am now completing it on my D drive.  The power settings must have been the cause.  I probably over exagerated the sound problems.  the system doesnt stutter straight away or crash all the time.  It just sometimes begins to stutter and then sometimes crashes if i let it go on.  It hasnt happened in a while.  I will let you know how the rest of the defrags go.  I should be able to see an acer (my laptop brand) technician before christmas.

im not sure about the multi task thing as it really only happens when dealing with sound, no otehr tasks.  my friends acer works fine.  but as i said i disabled all power managment features for the defrags and they seem to be going well so far!  is there anyway that i can fix what you mentioned?

Hi Gilly,

You need to defrag your c: drive offline and that will sort out the stubbern MFT files showing as up as red and then you can defrag the rest when in windows.

To defrag offline go into the options in O & O software when you have enabled the settings reboot and it will start defraging offline
