Starting up used to take about 15 seconds now it is even less. And I don't know why but even my dial up connection is responding faster! (due to Registry Mechanic?? ) overall everything is quicker and smoother than before, and here I was like DizZa my system was already quick, but now it is even more so.

A good part of the reason was because you were not running multiple defrag passes. Although it is a combination of setting things up right and cleaning the system of boot files, the defrag is one of the most misunderstood maintenance proceedures.

I have said this in the past many times... no matter what the defrag program shows in the graphic interface, it can take as many as 5 or more defrag passes to defrag a hard drive properly. This is especially true for systems that run less the 2 gigs of memory simply because the defrag program will skip files as it eats up resources during a pass.

That is also why it is critical you not touch your system while the defrag program is running... don

It reformats your hard drive and writes a virus to the boot sector, then flushes the BIOS chip so it cannot be reburned.

Just Kidding
;D

It writes a file called "layout.ini" to the prefetch folder which replaces the junk Microsoft prefetch with a optimized driver and boot file layout list for O&O defrag to use when optimizing your boot files.

That should only be done if you have completed the registry edits and cleaned out the prefetch folder (steps in the list) which turn off the M$ junk and clear your memory at boot.

I saw this thread for the first time today. I'm printing the tweak list now, I'm absolutely going to try this. Thanks Nick.

Nick, will only performing part of your process cause any problems?  I dont have registry mechanic yet but I am anxious to get started, the proper way.  I have, through trail and error over the past year, already done some of the steps, but not in any particular order.  Is it okay to start the process and stop in the middle, then begin again?  I think it will take me awhile to do it all at once but Im not sure Ill have the time to complete it in a single evening.  If so, where is the best place to take a break?  Thanks, Todd

Nick, thanks for the informative reply.  I figure that Ill be waiting a least 6 months before my new rig with Vista and such is purchased, so Im going to dabble with FS9 in that time frame.  Im not sure how much of an improvement Ill see, since at one time or another Ive adjusted alot of the settings.  I just wish Id had come across the best way of doing it sooner.  I am going to start from step one tomorrow just to verify each stage, and well see what happens.  One question I think you can help with is whether or not I need to update to the latest video card driver.  I have a 9600 Pro, and I have updated many driver versions, but stopped when I started seeing a decrease in performance as new drivers arrived.  I am satisfied with my current drivers, and wonder if the latest drivers would do anything for such an old card?  Thanks again for all the help.  Todd

Hello Nick - I notice that you make use of O&O defrag as part of your process.  I currently use PerfectDisk (latest version).  Is this achieving the same results that you are aiming for?  Or is O&O performing a specific function?

Thanks for your advice - Simon (YSSY)

Hi Nick;

Just a quick question...I  already have Norton System
Works which includes functions similar to the utilities you
recomend.  Do you think I could use it instead of the others since I already own it? ???

Nick I hope you are still around,

Is there as reason you prefer registry mechanic?

I have just seen this following link and max secure register cleaner came out better.
