Nick, you mention two programs in your article:

Registry Mechanic
O&O Defrag

Both of which are (relatively) expensive...

I already own RegistryFix, which according to http://www.compareregistrycleaners.com/ ... WAodGm7MaQ ranks #3 among the top 5 evaluated.

What RegistryFix lacks are the Registry Optimizer &
Registry Compactor  features of Registry Mechanic.

Are those two features alone worth the cost of purchase?

As for O&O Defrag, would the 'freeware' version be sufficient?

...or would it be best to invest ~$44 for the full version?

Who needs fsautostart? My system starts up like it were already ran.  ;D I Start with 17 tasks, and memory usage is really low.

Just did the tweaks and all but i have a problem with the Windows Prefatch bit...there should be 2 files there but i have NO files there now...is this a problem? ???

Go to C:\Windows\Prefetch

You should now only see 2 files in there similarly named:

LAYOUT.ini
NTOSBOOT-B00DFAAD.pf

If you have any other files in that folder, delete them now but leave the files NTOSBOOT and LAYOUT.ini alone.

Well I went through the whole setup as Nick describes (very well I must say). I too have always setup a pc using the "Black Viper" method of shutting down services and never had problems and always had a increase in performance and speed. That along with O&O Defrag (complete/name) has been my best "tweak" for Flight Sims as well as overall system performance.

BUT!

After spending the time it took to give Nicks setup a try and also spending some money on Registry Mechanic (I have always used Ace Utilities reg tool) and then defragging just as he states the difference is far more than I could expect considering I was doing good before!

Registry Mechanic is a sweet utility! and does a complete job it had found 172 errors, this after running Ace Ultiities which found none. My printer will now function properly where before it was a crap shoot if it would print or not and I tried everything to get that sucker stable and was about to disown HP forever :)

Starting up used to take about 15 seconds now it is even less. And I don't know why but even my dial up connection is responding faster! (due to Registry Mechanic?? ) overall everything is quicker and smoother than before, and here I was like DizZa my system was already quick, but now it is even more so.

Why this hasn't been stickied yet is beyond me, but Nicks information here is the absolute best "tweak" I have used yet. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Nick you have just gave the FS Community what it has been seeking for years!

Black Vipers method has flaws. He had the right idea but was not very smart about the number and types of services he posted to shut down. On top of that, back then people saw a increase because the norm was 512mb of memory. So you have a faster system (so it appeared) that was crippled.

With 1+gb of memory now being the norm that list is obsolete and even if it wasn't, the services being shut down for gaming will actually hinder performance because Windows is constantly looking for a service that does not exist for driver support in newer drivers.
