Just looking at fuel stats for the 747...

Capacity: 150,000kg.
transatlantic sector of about 8hrs, realistically more than 90-100 metric tonnes of fuelburn

So I should have at least 50t of spare fuel?! But I'm sure my engines ran out of it and refused to pull me any further

I had the AP on all the way: set to ~20.000feet and ~300kias. Maybe it's too fast? But it's not that I was close to the US coast - I was in the middle of the ocean!

300kts at 20,000ft would be more than reasonable. However, for crossing the atlantic, you really want to be at 34/36/38/40,000ft going westbound (weight permitting), otherwise you'll suffer a significant fuel penalty.

edit: Speed needs to be somewhere around M .80 to M.85

Way too low. You want 30-35K feet MSL.

Ok, but shouldn't I have come at least a bit further? Like I said: I wasn't even close...  :-X

The best way to find out, is to put theory into practice.

Attempt the flight again, this time with the suggestions from here in mind.

That is, holding a speed of around 0.85 Mach, and cruising at around 30-35K feet.

Well I'm going to do so as soon as I've got the time!

Any suggestions to the other two points (flightplan & ATC contol whilst 'speeding')?

Mach .85 at 35,000ft will only be 280-290kts IAS.

As for route, I'd suggest you manually input the route I posted earlier in the thread (perhaps add Lands End (LND) VOR before LIMRI, and after YQX, put in Yarmouth (YQI) or Halifax (YHZ) VOR then Boston (BOS) on the way to New York.

Thanks for the help so far! I'm gonna try the route and FL + speed and see if I get closer to the new world...  ;)

But still one question: how to satisfy ATC while speeding in 16x? Is there a way to automatically slow down again when ATC demands some sort of change/the ATC menu pops up?

Hi all,

I flew Trans Atlantic many years ago with TWA and the suggestions are correct. You might look into FSBuild (Google it), payware that uses NA tracks, etc. I use it with the Level D 767; it exports the flight plan to FS as well as the 767 'company route' as to be able to program the 767 FMS.

Nice software, just takes a little practice. Also, I  8x is the max FS will keep up with when I use the 767.

Hope this helps.
