A simple solution, really. Utilize the modified Terrain.cfg file by Dick Ludowise and Luis Feliz-Tirado, available here;

http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=93289

This is a modified version of the default Terrain.cfg file. Hope that Anxyous doesn't call the cops of Dick and Luis??? ;D

It will not reflect any changes made by addon scenery programs, such as Ultimate Terrain, Vancouver+ or Victoria+. Starting the UTX setup utility will allow the program to verify the absence of it's required entries and the setup utility will make any needed changes.

I'm like Nick, I wouldn't trust a Repair process within FSX. Not that anything could go wrong... ;)

you might want to try Allen or Jeff in the UTX forums. They are the guru's of the terrain.cfg

OR LANCE

I would tread cautiously with the repair option.  I tried it myself when something went wrong with my sp2 update.  FSX (and my addons) were adversely impacted.  I finally had to reinstall fsx and ALL addons from scratch.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions and help.

I'll post if the link to the modified terrain worked. cheers for that!!

My sim with help from NickN runs perfectly and the though of reinstalling everything again is a headache. I have lots of add-ons, FEX, GEX, UTX etc..

Im thinking something has messed it up or there is an addon which conflicts with utx. My Fsx kept crashing in Europe, USA is ok. When i remove he UTX entries in the Terrain.cfg my sim works fine, but there is land where there should be sea. I've tried reinstalling UTX, but then the sim (Bought and paid for) starts unexpectidly quiting in certain areas.

Well I had the same problem. Land where there is supposed to be sea. I traced the problem to my FTX Orbx scenery. When you are flying anywhere in the world besides Australia make sure you are not in FTX mode.

Cheers bob,

I'll look into that as i purchased the FTX Blue series, recently uninstalled it though. Its possibly still been on FTX mode.

I'll try reinstalling it to see if FSX runs ok, with sea by turning off FTX mode.

Might be a good idea as I never had the land, sea problem before I installed FTX. Just use FTX mode when you are using that scenery. If I recall some others on this site had the same problem. krigl (Roger) being one of them.

If that doesnt work try having UTX rebuild the terrain config. Thats advise from NickN. I had that problem in Europe and it was UTX that caused it.  ;)

Hope it helps

I've done the reinstall dance many times  with FSX. Between tweeking and add ons it was getting to be a real pain when something got messed up. So what I finally learned was the golden rule of backing up your files with copies, and that's what i did on my last clean reinstall. I made copies of the important files, all CFG's, Terrain, Scenery, Effects,  Gauges, Shaders, and Aircraft. I tried the repair option and it hurt more than it help, but with the copies of the above, now it is much easier to find the problem and fix it or just reinstall that one file. But remember and I know we've all heard it a millon times BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP any file your gona change before you change it.

Heres what I do...

I install everything into FSX, get it tweaked and set up exactly as I want it and then simply make a duplicate on a backup drive and keep that updated as I make changes.

If I reinstall FSX all I have to do is install everything to be sure the registry is correctly installed and then delete the entire Flight Simulator X install folder from the drive (I use a separate drive for FSX) and copy the backup into the drive

everything is as it was and set back up exactly as I had it with no tweaking. All I have to do is defrag the drive

The only external is the FSX.cfg which I edit manually to reflect my last backup cfg

If I lose something I simply browse to the backup and grab the file(s) I need

and I also make it a habit now to update the backup as I make any change and confirm the change is solid.

As long as FSX remains in the same place on the same drive letter it works without a hitch but it does require a good size backup drive
