Aircraft handling?

Postby Paul Mohr » Mon Oct 27, 2008 11:14 am

Hey guys and/or girls I guess. I'm new and just have a question that I hope is simple to answer. How do change or re assign the handling characteristics of an aircraft? I don't really want to design one or anything complicated I just want to make one handle like one that is already there. Mainly I want to make a helicopter I downloaded handle like a Jet. Like say a Harrier or some other short take off type aircraft.

I was hoping I could swap a file from one folder to another or something but I don't even know where to start. I played around a little but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Well, i'm not sure how really, but the files you need to edit are the aircraft.cfg and .air files.

That's kind of what I thought, but really wasn't looking to edit the files, just swap them. I tried to copy and paste both those files though and it didn't work. I only tried with one aircraft though. I figured I would just ask before dinking around too much with it.

To change the .air file, copy and paste it into the plane folder where you want it. Then open the aircaft.cfg, find the lines relating to a texture e.g.

[fltsim.0]
title=Boeing 747-400 Paint1
sim=Boeing747-400
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=1kb_checklists=Boeing747-400_check
kb_reference=Boeing747-400_ref
atc_id=N747K
atc_airline=Boeing
atc_flight_number=1123
atc_heavy=1
ui_manufacturer="Boeing"
ui_type="747-400"
ui_variation="Boeing livery"
ui_typerole="Commercial Airliner"
ui_createdby="Microsoft Corporation"
description="More than 30 years ago, the 747 made its first trip from New York to London.  Since then, it's become the standard by which other large passenger jets are judged. Its size, range, speed and capacity were then, and are now, the best in its class."

All the text after the = sign refers to the file, or it can just be text. Like texture=1 refers to the plane texture which is .1 file. atc_heavy=1 is just to do with if ATC recognizes the plane as being heavy.

Look at the sim part:
sim=Boeing747-400
The boeing747-400 is the name of the .air file, to change it, just delete the Boeing747-400 and replace it with the new .air file name, e.g. Airbus_A321

If you want to change the whole .cfg file, copy all the parts of text which begin with
[fltsim.0] or[fltsim.6] and paste them into the new aircaft.cfg. Make sure you delete all the [fltsim.] which were there.

If ur talking aobut how responsive an aircraft then go to the cg file. If you look for aileron effectivness or rudder effectivness just change that number. The higher it is the more effective it is

Wow, I was hoping to just swap files but it looks it doesn't work that way.

So lets say I want to change the way a helicopter flies.

I take the the .air file from another aircraft, say the harrier and copy/paste it into the copter folder.

Then I open the aircraft config file in the helicopter folder and edit it. And I want to change the (sim=xxxxxx) line to match the name from the harrier file.

Is that pretty much the jist of it? I will try it and see what happens.

Thanks for the help. I assume I just do this in notebook as well?

I figured it out, some tinkering but I got it. I just swapped both files and did some editing to make it read correct. I still need to mess with it a bit because the vapor trails for the wings and the lights are off. Most because the harrier is wider than the helicopter. I think I can fix it if I put my mind to it though.

I changed the Falcon helicopter in case anyone is wondering. My kid thought it looked cool but I didn't like the way it flew. Now it breaks the sound barrier ;).

Thanks a lot,
