I'm scared of flying...

Postby the_sas_man » Sun Sep 07, 2008 2:37 pm

Hi all

So I have major hang ups about flying. I can get on a plane but REALLY struggle to keep calm. I've done so much research about how safe planes are but I still worry.

So anyway, next week I have a monster of a gaming rig arriving and I really wanted to give FSX a try. I'm hoping that by understanding flight a little bit (even if it's only a fraction) it might help the stress levels when it comes to real flying. And of course I love gaming too! I don't expect a miracle cure but maybe some good will come of it.

Before my game and joystick arrive (got deluxe edition and joystick for

I'm sure it'll help curing your fear of flying ;)

If you wanna spend some money, some environment add-ons, like FEX (or REX if you can wait) FTX and UTX (there are many)

If you wanna buy some planes, you will not regret buying the RealAir SF260.

Good luck! :)

Thank You Thank You and Thnak You.

I'm lucky in hat I have an extrenal hard drive so I can effectively get everything teed up for the games arrival.

Thank you Wii for the heads up on the links. I'll have a good rummage around.

I of course have no idea how realistic FSX is. But it would be nice to think it will help me understand a little bit more about flying.

Thanks again

Welcome to SimV.... :)

I would suggest heading down to the flightschool board, and reading through the Private Pilot course by Brett Henderson. Once you get your computer and FSX setup, I would also suggest you start learning, and practicing various maneuvers, navigation, landing, ect in a single engine aircraft.

I'm hoping and praying I can get full settings on this:

750 gig hard drive
Q6600 Quard Core 2.66 ghz w. liquid coling
4 gig RAM (altho its win vista 32bit so I won't see all that!)
ATI Radeon 4870 512 MB
Blu-Ray/HD DD Drive
Centurion 570 case
700w Coolermasterpsu
No monitor - i'll hook it up to my 32 inch Bravia :-D

So at the moment I'm using my external 500g hard drive to download the best free availble mods for FSX in preperation. I have some sprays and scenery mods. I presume FS 2004 mods work on FSX?

Also, do I need to be careful with the mods as I have the deluxe edition in the post?

Hi there. By all means install the official updates (SP1 & SP2) that Wii recommended  but I suggest you get FSX running properly before worrying about 3rd party addons. There should be quite enough to try in the default sim to keep you happy for a while. If you want something to do in the meantime you could check out the FSX FAQ here ----> http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1197423715

if you want to get over your fear of flying don't fly Airliners or Military aircraft youll probly mess up and crash, instead fly a Cessna 172 and use the lessons to get a handle on flying once you do you know your in control of that airplane (much like real airline pilots)

and welcome to SimV

I really don't know if FSX will help you get over your fear of flying, but if you make an appointment with your doctor, he can probably prescribe some stuff that will take the edge off. If it's strong enough it might make flying downright fun  :)

There also proper simulators for planes, not on the computer, but where you go into a simulator cockpit and fly the plane.

True, and they can be much more fun then any version of FS, they are VERY expensive. Especially if you want to get in enough flight to really understand how it works. FS is much more cost effective.  ;D

Flying is great.  Its an incredible new world that opens up for you once you get over the fear and see first hand just how safe it really is.  The flight sim will help you understand it better but if you really wanna get over your fear, find an instructor and go take a few lessons.  Once you get over the initial "Oh S%@, what did I get myself into" problem, its fun and quite addicting.  Good luck!! :)

Welcome to the FS world and, of course, Simviation.  :)

So I have major hang ups about flying.

The good thing about FS is it will teach you about flight dynamics, lift and numerous other things that may well relax you when flying in the real world, helping you understand what's going on out there.

As has been mentioned by Hagar, get your Sim loaded up and have a look at the default aircraft first, starting with GA (General Aviation) like the Cessna and Beechcraft. They're relatively simple to fly (in comparison to the big jets) and will teach you all you need to know regarding keeping them in the air, and flying in general.
Lessons are essential too.. they may be boring at first but stick with them, they will help more than you realise and quicken your simming experience and knowledge.

Above all, good luck and we're here to help with any questions you have  :)
